A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To My High School Reunion

A funny thing happened on the way to my high school reunion: I forgot to give a damn about all the stuff that was important in high school. There's a definite beauty in going back home for your (gulp!) thirtieth reunion. You see, the last one I went to was my tenth reunion, and the vibe is just completely different. First of all there were a lot more of us, and there was also a feeling of  "Oh, look how good I'm doing, and how are you?"  and "I can't believe ------ had the nerve to say hello" pervading the whole event....more

I survived my 30 year high school reunion!!

So, I recently wrote about how Facebook changed my memories of high school and how my 30th reunion was coming up soon.  I decided a while ago I was going to go, and Karol (the woman formerly known as Bluebell) said she would go with me.  I was excited when the reunion was first announced.  I shared how people on Facebook had reconnected with me in such a positive affirming way, and that really reassured me that it would be okay....more

How Facebook Changed My Memories of High School

I have to admit I was surprised by some of the people who wanted to "friend" me. These people were not my friends in high school that I remembered. Some of them had not been very nice to me. Why did they want to be my friend now? It made me start to think that the kids who were mean to me didn't remember being mean. I remembered. ...more

High School Reunion, Yay or Nay?

It’s time for Monday Listicles, a weekly blog link up hosted by Stash at A Good Life.  Today, due to a suggestion by Rachel (Totally Ovar It), the Listicles blogging community is exploring the pros and cons of attending your school reunion.  For me, it’s a timely subject to contemplate.  I graduated from high school in 1987.  Put your eyeballs back in...more

Ten Years Out

Do you go to your class reunions? I’ve gone to only one of mine—the ten year one. When the invitation arrived, I set it aside without much thought; I’d kept in touch with a good number of my classmates, so I felt no burning desire to attend. But then the phone started ringing. One by one, a network of old friends reached out to see who was planning to go, most taking the attitude of “Well, if you go, I’ll go.” The calls went on until there was a big circle of maybes, and then finally we decided to just do it....more

The Nerd, The Stripper, and the High School Reunion

Back in high school, I was a hairy-legged feminist who swore that I would never become ensnared by that most commonly deployed tool of the patriarchy, marriage. At my ten year reunion, which was five years ago already, I was a hairy-legged feminist who brought along my husband of four years. This is why I was so excited when BlogHer CE Karen Walrond brought my attention to a woman who hired a stripper to impersonate her at her ten year reunion, I rubbed my hands together with greedy glee. ...more

On Reunions and Rediscovering Friends

Three months ago, a number of women from my very small, all-girls' high school got in touch on Facebook. One person led to another who knew three more and all of a sudden here were these multiple tiny, grown-up heads in avatars that I'd last seen in 1988. Our school closed in 1990 when the nuns ran out of money, and in the years since I kept in touch with one person, my closest friend from those years, but for the most part the rest of us scattered to who knew where. ...more

It was hard to just call her Marsha. It has been 30 years since I graduated from high school. Yikes, I didn't realize how odd that would look in print! So much has changed since then. Especially me. ...more
