The Sensationalization of Teen Pregnancy

I wasn't sure if I really wanted to write about this controversial subject. After all, it could happen to anyone, right? Wrong! I am not one of those parents who will let their kids run wild with the laid-back, "cool parent" attitude of "kids will be kids". Key word here is "kids". Second key word being "parents". Q: Why do "kids" have "parents"?A: To keep them from harm and help them make moral decisions. ...more

Graduation, a Freight Train, and the Explosion in my Chest

There is a party going on, an imbroglio in my chest cavity where competing emotions vie for dominance. My eldest daughter is graduating from high school in just under three weeks, and my chest has been aching, spasming even. I am not having a heart attack, nor am I undergoing a panic attack. Rather, my heart is being attacked by emotion, apparently ALL the emotions....more

Thank you for commenting! I read your post about your own daughter's upcoming graduation, and I ...more

American Idol Contestant Scotty McCrerry Pitches A Varsity Game (Not)

Back in February, the News & Observer wrote about a North Carolina high school pitcher named Scotty McCreery, who at the time was facing a huge dilemma. Should he choose between continuing the "American Idol" contestant process or return home to pitch for Garner High's varsity team. He picked the former and we now know that turned out to be quite a good decision. ...more

Banned From the Prom | High School Punishment

James Tate had a unique way to invite Sonali Rodrigues to the prom; he and his friends posted large letters to the wall at his high school entrance.  Romantic?  Fun?  Maybe.  Banned from the prom?  Yes. He received an in-school suspension for his antics. ...more

is where I have issue with the action taken. Suspension for hanging a sign seems out of line ...more

Radio show about improving your high school (or middle school) athlete's brain with brain training

There is a sports radio show called "Best Seat in the House." On the May 10th show they had a program about high school athletes improving their brains through brain training. One female diver's mom was on the show talking about how her daughter was having some trouble academically because she spent so much time/energy diving and couldn't take extra academic classes and work. She went through an intensive brain training program and not only did it help her academics, but also her athletics!...more

Easy A - Movie Review

Raise your hand if you think John Hughes wrote (and directed) some great movies about high school? Yep,me too. Well, the filmmakers of Easy A apparently thought the same thing - or they wouldn't have referenced some of his most iconic films for this modern high school story.

Donating My Hair: What Have I Done?

I’m an expert at going against the flow. I will not be one of them. Every other girl at my high school has long, straightened hair. When they walk by, you can smell the crispy, burnt ends. Sort of like a campfire. Not really. Campfires smell good. ...more

Why Life is Like Chutes N Ladders

Did you ever feel like you were completely unstoppable and then someone or something proved you wrong?  I had one of those moments this morning as I played Chutes N Ladders with my 4-year-old daughter.  She begrudgingly smiled when I climbed up the ladder, but squealed with delight when I made my way down the chute.  I tried not to take it personal and worked hard to model sportsmanlike conduct. Still, as the game continued and I struggled to make my way to the top, I could not help but draw parallels to life and the way that it seems to work....more
