How to help your grandson with his homework

A few days ago my nine year old grandson needed help with his harvest moon poem so here is what we started out with  Leaves are in the trees. Leaves are turning brown and falling on the ground. Now I have to rake for goodness sake! Guess I need a break! We didn't like the first poem we came up with so made another one.I can see the moon. "I Can't Do My Homework Because We Have Termites," and Other Lies My Son Told

So then…I open an email from Tucker’s 6th grade teacher that says: “Dear Mrs. Perdu: Tucker did not have his homework today; he told me this was because there was a termite infestation at home. I told him he needed to ask you to write a note explaining the situation, but he said that his family did not believe in writing notes. However, since our homework policy is not to accept late work, I would appreciate a note or an e-mail when unusual situations occur so that Tucker can receive full credit....more

First things first

One of my sons had chosen to take a nap after school before dragging himself to football practice. By the time he got home and showered, it was already 8:30 p.m. when he was starting up his laptop to do his homework.“When is this due?” I set him up with a plate of food and a drink at his desk.“I have to get this part done by tomorrow.”...more

I've come up with a new plan.  I have piles of homework and needed some motivation to get through it. I have a bag of Heath bites.  After I complete each assignment, I eat one.  Just one...I don't want to end up as big as a house!  Nothing motivates me better than chocolate.  I've already tried it once and it worked beautifully.  Heath ranks right at the top of my list of favorites, followed closely by Almond Joy and Baby Ruth....more

Hope and Homework, Today Anyway

Are High Schools Sending Parents a Double Message?

When I attended the middle school back-to-school night last week, I felt like there was something bothering me, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Was it the 95 degree heat? Was it the 47,000 papers I was supposed to take with me now that our school is paper-free? Was it the mwa-mwah-mw-mwa-mwa-mwahhh quality of the PA system? No. It was none of those things. But on the drive home, I figured it out. It was the double message that we parents are subjected to when it comes to parental involvement in our children's education....more

I’m No Math Genius…Shhhh…Don’t Tell My Daughter…

My grandfather was a math genius. He was in the Navy during World War II, and rumor has it, he could calculate where to aim the torpedoes faster in his head than they could on paper. This skill meant he was an invaluable asset, and he was taken on submarine mission after submarine mission after submarine mission – something that eventually led to his death....more

Doing Your Child's Homework

Children are busier than ever.  Early morning hockey and swimming practices, after-school sports activities, religious obligations, and maybe even after-school employment or volunteer responsibilities compete for their time.  Schedules can become overwhelmed and not allow enough time to do everything, so some families find that they skimp and relax the rules for homework....more
