#NaBloPoMo Day 7: Who Are We When We Are Ten? (trigger warning)

“Who are we when we’re ten that we need to be more or less of?” ~ ReemTen was a pivotal year for me. Ten was the year I learned what a “dyke” was and how I should hide the fact that I was one....more

Mother of Gay Son Ponders Gay Dad Project

“I’m gonna getcha,” cried my son who had just arrived home from his first fall at college. It was Christmas and our extended family was gathered to celebrate. He, this newly formed man, was on all fours scrambling after his toddler cousin. Our collective laughter spiraled the room as the new-to-walking little boy mimicked Frankenstein in his efforts to get away. My son scooped his cousin up and razzed the baby’s belly creating fits of giggles for them both. Later, my son asked, “Mom, do you think I’ll be a good father?”...more

The Art of Being Sorry: Lip Service, Empathy, and the Breeding of Covert -isms

Apologies are like assholes.  Most stink. But, also like assholes, they’re necessary for getting shit out of the way.  And by shit, I mean the not-so-well-thought-out garbage that flows from most of our mouths in moments of less than stellar verbal acumen.  Especially when you’re a celebrity or politician. We say things when and where we shouldn’t.  Our timing gets off or are filter springs a leak.  It happens.   When you’re a notable person, it happens in 3D....more

Can I Be That Mom? Saying No to Chick-Fil-A and Boy Scouts

My children -- while they definitely won’t have the problem of having restricted cartoon viewing or lack of alcohol exposure may, despite my best efforts, still come out of childhood feeling slighted. It’s hard to explain to your eight-year-old why you won’t match her in wearing her Susan B. Komen regalia when she thinks it’s so cool. To your ten year old why you don’t want him to be a Scout. To either of them why chicken nuggets and waffle fries have to be passed over....more

The Black Church’s Conundrum: What Would Jesus Do?

President Obama’s recent announcement that he believes gay couples should have the right to marry has touched the hearts of millions of Americans, gay and straight. It’s likely we all have gay friends and family members who have suffered due to discrimination, exclusion, and shaming. Personally, I have seen tremendous hatred toward gay people in my family and in the churches I attended as a youth and young adult.  ...more

Minorities Hating Minorities

So you've heard about the case in the news where this Indian student filmed his roommate with another man and threatened to broadcast it live.  The roommate ended up jumping off a bridge.  The kid who filmed him ended up getting like ten years in jail for a hate crime and invasion of privacy....more

Teaching Acceptance

I have watched last week's Glee episode no less than five times. It just gets to me.One Sunday afternoon, I took BG to our town's Christmas parade. We managed to find a spot right at the front of the sidewalk in front of this really nice older couple and their two young boys.  At one point, a young dance troupe went by made up of a few girls and one boy. I heard the boys snickering at this boy, but it was what happened next that floored me....more

Blogging for LGBT Families: Dear Ellen

Dear Ellen, Huh. I just realized I've never written a letter to a celebrity before -- or I don't think I have. I don't remember ever writing to Sean Cassidy or Donnie Osmond or Karen Carpenter as a kid, and I certainly can't remember ever writing a letter to a celebrity as an adult. Now I'm all self-conscious about this, is there a certain way to write a letter to a celebrity? Do you have to watch that celebrity's shows in order to write a letter because I don't really watch your show....more

Fear in the Locker Room: School Sports, Homophobia and Transphobia

Rick Welts, president and chief executive of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, has just come out as gay. It was a significant and risky move in an industry that is not known for its tolerance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. (LA Laker star Kobe Bryant recently paid a $100,000 fine for calling a referee a "faggot.") And as Megan Hueter has written here at BlogHer, women’s collegiate basketball suffers similar problems. Homophobia and transphobia in sports are not confined to the professional and collegiate levels, however....more
