Growing up, I was told that getting chilled outside would give me a cold. "Put on your coat or you'll get sick!" my mother would shriek as I blasted out the door. It's true we're more likely to catch colds and flu during winter, but we don't catch colds or flu from going outside scantily clad. Why is it that we seem to catch more colds in the winter, then?

I happen to believe in vaccinations, and I'm a big believer in the flu shot. I like to tell the story this way: We never got flu shots until the year when the entire family was felled by flu, one by one. It took a full month to run through our home, by which time three of the four of us had experienced secondary infections.

Each year I get my seasonal flu shot. I never want to get the shot or the flu. I tell my kids it doesn't hurt, but they know better now. I get vaccinated because I am hopeful that developing immunity against the flu will help keep my family and friends healthier too....more
