Cosmetic surgery is overrated. While smaller noses and bigger boobs have their place in society, neither contribute directly to the mission of creating a harmonious, cooperative world. A co-worker with calf implants won’t make the work day easier, but you know what will? A co-worker with common sense implants. Enter: Character Surgery.Imagine the possibilities.A little nip here for tempering those passive-aggressive tendencies; a little tuck there for improving a woeful sense of humor....more
My daughter is 17, a self proclaimed "individual", likes her basketball shorts, baggy t-shirts, and high top basketball shoes (usually lime green). The only thing she does for a beauty regiment is letting me blow dry her hair, no make-up, no curls nothing. Lime green is her favorite color from her glasses, to her clothes, to her shoes. She made the school annual just because of her daily clothes ensemble.
So she decided to partake in the Distinguished Young Women Competition. The competition consisted of, self expression, interview, fitness, talent....more
As the snow begins to melt and the sun begins to shine several thoughts run across my mind. One is the inevitable ten pounds from winter hibernation and begin to focus on all of the things I hate about me. I am guilty about making jokes about my muffin-tops, dingle dangles, and wobbly bites all of the things I wish I could airbrush away.

You see, my girlfriends and I have a lot of conversations about growing older and the subsequent fears that it ensues. Standard stuff...biological clocks tick-tocking, crows feet coming a knocking, etc....more
I've begun reading the Tao Te Ching (Barnes & Noble Classics edition) which houses the central tenets of Taoism. The result was the Tao Te Ching. There is so much legend swirling around the legendary Tao master, including a story that his mother carried him in her womb until he was 72; he came out an old man, replete with white hair. Taoism, as I've learned from my limited re...more
She is wrapped in a towel before practice, waiting patiently on deck while her new coach introduces herself, explains what is expected. Her body stays hidden until she carefully slips into the water, shedding her protective skin poolside.
I hold my breath, watching.
She is a speck in the water, her blue capped head bobbing up and down the lane. Arms dart out in front, one after the other, stroke after stroke, stroke after stroke. Legs pedaling hard. It looks tedious. I am doubtful this new interest will last....more
