People forget: We're supposed to be nice

I've been part of an interviewing panel at my company. We've searched through a score of resumes and talked to a lot of people. My favorite part of the interviews come when the candidates ask us about our team and we can talk about how we are like a family. (It gives me the warm fuzzies every time.) At some point, the candidates will usually mention how nice we all seem....more

Undisclosed 1 1/2

Undisclosed Deux is almost completed. It really is surreal. Here I sit in the back cottage and I can catch the internet if the wind blows right. It's hard to believe that the cottage days might be over this time next week. I would like to say that the kindness of neighbors have gotten us through it. But when we step outside of the bubble it's glaringly apparent that Christian is different. Those who stare the longest and even make comments or look terrified are usually kids, mostly boys, that are pre-teen, around the ages of 8-10. ...more

What We Can Learn from the "Elan Gale and Diane in 7A" Hoax

On November 28, Elan Gale decided to entertain the world by making up a story that we have all experienced in one way or another. He tweeted that he'd boarded a US Airways flight on his way back to Los Angeles, that the flight was running late, and that one passenger was furiously yelling about it. Soon, Gale was live-tweeting a fictional battle with a woman immortalized as "Diane in 7A." What unfolded on his feed can only be described as a how to on behaving badly. What made it so hard to look away is the same thing that makes reality TV the addictive thing it is. Is it time to reconsider? ...more
I couldn't help but think when I was reading this tale that Gale's behavior was totally ...more
