Once again the school had sent notes home about another outbreak of head lice. Of course, I was confident that we had never had and never would get lice. Since she was in morning kindergarten, Rachel had missed the head check that afternoon. It seems that lice epidemics thrive in the younger grades and slowly spread through the entire school. So over the phone, the school secretary asked me to check Rachel's scalp. I laughed and said, “I just washed her hair last night; I really don’t think she has any but I’ll check anyway.”...more
My dearest Agatha,I miss you terribly, but I assure you that all continues to be well here on the battlefront. Thus far, skirmishes have been limited to soldiers in camp whom I am not familiar with, having never once had them to my side of the camp for a pre-arranged hour of rambunctiousness (with snacks). Almost weekly I receive anonymous notes that someone, somewhere in our camp, has been afflicted, and I am warned that I must remain vigilant. Happily, I continue to be pest-free....more
I get a call this morning as I’m rushing out the door for our Church Tubing party. It was Grandma. She had watched Poppet yesterday so I could attend an event. Apparently there is a head lice issue that has surfaced in the family. Now, I’ve never had lice, but the thought of these little creatures taking hold in my home is terrifying. “I’m sorry to tell you this, Marinka,” she said, “but your daughter has mice.”
“Oh?” I said. How fun! Mice are cute and furry. I love all of God’s creatures, big and small. “I wonder where she got the mice!”...more

I’m wondering how long it will take me to realize that there is always going to be something no one told me about parenting until that one. outrageous. thing. occurs. Then, all the more senior parents exchange knowing looks: “Oh, now she gets it,” their eyes say, mockingly. “Another newbie we kept in the dark about the. outrageous. thing.” It’s so easy to be smug, unless you’re the first timer....more
