Homemade Make-Ahead Hot Pastry Pockets

Now that I’m working and living on my own, I have a new appreciation for my mom’s ability to put together amazing meals for us every night when I was a kid. Despite juggling grad school, lab, and later, a full-time job and my extracurricular activities, she always managed to throw together the most delicious, multidish meals for us to feast on every night. Considering all I have the energy to do when I get home from work is sit on the couch and drink wine, that boggles my mind....more
@Kizz I'd do before baking... but I'm not the recipe creator... just a random reader! I made ...more

Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup

Fall is an exciting time. For starters, it's my favorite season, not just for the juicy fresh locally grown apples and all of the amazing seasonal recipes but also for all of the changes. The leaves start to turn and the weather gets cooler. It means bundling up in cozy clothes, snuggling under a blanket and sipping on a hot drink....more
Can't wait to try this!  It's on the menu for this week.more

One Pot Black Beans & Quinoa

In the kitchen I have big ideas that are rarely matched with ambitions of the same size. Because I am a lazy cook. I overcame my short comings in the culinary section of the house when I discovered the joy of bulk cooking. I subsequently fell in love with preparing meals in my rice cooker - it's not just for rice anymore!...more
@JL Fields Awesome, thanks. Will give it a shot! more

Cavatelli With Roasted Vegetables and Ricotta Cheese

I have talked before about how I try to prepare meals, fully or partially, ahead of time. Honestly, I don’t know how people manage without doing this. I try to prepare nice meals almost every night. I do not get home from work until about 5:30 and by then I do not have the patience to spend one to two hours cooking. At the same time, there are only so many nights in a week that I can get away with serving frozen pizza. If you are wondering what that number is, it is two. After two, I get a nasty look, so two pizza nights is the limit in our house....more

Turkey Chili, and Other Quick & Easy Soups From Bone Broths

Now that I have a 5-month-old baby, I no longer have time to prepare all of my meals from scratch. But since it is especially crucial right now to eat nourishing home-cooked meals, the best solution is to prepare them ahead of time, so that I can easily heat them up whenever I am pressed for time....more

Rustic Penne and Shrimp Pasta

After spending the last year and a half in New England on our little 'life vacation,' and a couple of weeks bouncing between our parents' homes, then living out of boxes in our new house (before photo tour!) for the last couple of weeks, I finally feel a little settled. A little. Furthermore, Emma is at her Mother's Day Out program today (she goes twice a week) and all I have on my list today is to make dinner for Mike and me tonight....more
This looks great! I am going to have to try this soon. more

Manicotti From Freezer to Oven

I've mentioned a few times since starting my new(ish) job that I'm a big fan of make-ahead meals. Trying to cook during the week is hard enough as it is, but when you get home later than you'd like and have a toddler who starts getting ready for bed by 7:30, it becomes much more difficult....more

Make Ahead Quiche

How many times have you gotten home from a long day and wished that you had nothing to do for the rest of the night but sit on the couch and watch TV, or take a nice long bubble bath and read? But the reality is it's 6 o'clock, and you have to make dinner.Maybe just for yourself.Maybe for yourself and your spouse.Or *gasp* maybe even for yourself and a handful of hungry children. On days like that, you laugh at the thought of those "oh so quick" 30 minute meals....more

Lemon Pomegranate Cookies

I don't know about you, but I'm so over summer. My least favorite season, with its triple digit heat and unusually active biting bugs, is finally coming to an end. I'm also excited and beyond ready for pumpkin spice lattes, totes of Honeycrisp apples, the return of my favorite TV shows (hello Boardwalk Empire and 2 Broke Girls!), watercolored leaves, and fall-flavored treats up the wazoo. There's only one problem. It's not quite fall yet....more
@kandy57  Hi Kandy! When baked immediately (and gently mixed!), the seeds stay pretty well ...more

Bulk Cooking and Freezing Ease Make Ahead Meals

I often receive questions about crock pot cooking, meal planning, and cooking in bulk. Most of these questions come from friends and readers who love to cook but can't find the time most evenings to pull off a big dinner.Although I don't dust off my crock pot nearly as often as I should, I do have plenty of ideas on planning and making meals in advance....more
