Pumpkin Yard Art

When I moved to the suburbs of Illinois, I did not expect to find so many homes decorated for Halloween. Every time we go out to eat or to run an errand, I turn down a different street, just to see what's down it, and every time we find house after house after house decorated for Halloween. ...more

Everything you ever wanted to know about pumpkins

I'm not sure how much you know about pumpkins but I think everyone should know just a few pieces of useless information. I can't think of a better topic than pumpkins, can you? If you're really getting into this Month of Pumpkins thing and would like to come to Illinois and visit the pumpkin capital, I'll go with you. It's not all that far from my home. I know this because I have read every word on this Pumpkin Patch page. ...more

Pumpkin Poetry

What does it say when "Peter Peter pumpkin eater" is the only thing that comes to mind when I think about pumpkin poetry? I mean please, can a nursery rhyme be any more offensive than that one? Pumpkin shell indeed. Luckily, there are other pumpkin rhymes and I'm hoping one of them will get stuck in my head soon and rid me of Peter and his patriarchal ways. ...more

Cinderella Perfect Pumpkins

I'll admit to being a fan of Disney's Cinderella. I know, the whole Disney princess thing can be problematic, from the feminist perspective, but I like a good fairy tale. It can't be helped, I was raised on Cinderella. ...more

Pumpkin Warts

I can honestly say that I've never chosen a pumpkin because it was ugly or quirky or non-traditional. I've always chosen a pumpkin because it was a nice color, size or shape. Sometimes the color, size and shape decision was influenced by the fact that I was going to carve it or paint it, but usually not. I just see the pumpkin that looks "good" and that's the one that comes home. Sort of like the Christmas tree that looks good on the lot but once at home, you realize it doesn't fit the house or the stand or any of your actual Christmas tree needs. ...more

Pumpkin Cake

Happy birthday to me! If I was going to have a birthday cake, which I'm not, I'd be happy with a pumpkin cake. Not one shaped like a pumpkin or frosted in orange goo, just one that tastes like pumpkin and nutmeg. As someone smartly commented in the Pumpkin Spice Latte thread, it is the nutmeg that is the "crack". ...more

Pumpkin Carving Tricks

Yesterday, we carved our pumpkins. Well I didn't, I don't carve pumpkins, I just assist. TW and five children carved pumpkins in our living room because the weather goddess hates me and decided it should rain on our last full day with all five kids. I'm lucky, the clean up was minimal because the kids are all pretty grown up and everyone except the 22 year old stayed on the sheets that I spread out around the living room. TW made the biggest mess and the dog dragged pumpkin guts around the house a little bit but I'm used to the dog doing that sort of thing. ...more

Pumpkin Pancakes

This morning, err afternoon actually because adult children do not get up at the crack of dawn unless they have to, we all walked the 1/2 mile from our house to Walker Brother's Pancake House, (This post is not mine, but it's a good Walker Brother's post so I'm linking it.) ...more

The Pumpkin Patch

I always enjoy taking the kids to pumpkin patches in October. We don't go every year and this year is the first time that five of the six children have gone to a pumpkin patch together. Today, after a stroll through Long Grove, IL for their apple festival, we all headed to Krolls Farm in Waukegan, about 40 minutes from our house in Glenview. ...more

The Pumpkin Spice Latte

Yesterday I shared the breaking news about people who actually LIKE cooler weather and today I've got some more shocking news to share. There are real live funny smart people who do not order a Quad Grande Nonfat Caramel Macchiato when they go to Starbucks in the fall. Those people seem to love, love, love the Pumpkin Spice Latte. ...more
