The Real World Risk of an MTV Contract

When I read MTV’s Real World Contract posted by The Village Voice, one of the many elements that struck me was the danger and acceptability of misusing language when used for financial gain. Words like “rape,” “violate,” and “sexual assault” are nasty, heavy, uncomfortable words, words that land like bricks, words that everyone has difficulty understanding when they are “appropriate” to use, and ironically, even survivors have trouble using these terms to describe their experiences. It is much easier to say “non-consensual physical contact.” It is easier to write “interacting” or “carries the risk.” It is easier to dress it all up under the guise that a signature means consent. ...more

The Joke's On Us: 5 Reasons to Not Watch Jersey Shore

This week's guest blog is by Kathryn Doorey, an editorial intern with MissRepresentation.org"Nicole was all about liquor and partying and ass in the air and it was like she doesn't have respect for herself." - Mike"The best way of getting back at a girl is to have sex with her."  - Vinny"Sam and Ron were so reckless towards each other, I'm surprised no one ended up in the hospital or arrested." - Jenny...more

MTV Turns Dirty Thirty.

I was alive for four whole months before MTV existed.Prince, Michael Jackson, Modonna, Aerosmith, Nirvana and Pearl were my youth.  Not just listening to them. Seeing them. Living their music through the stories they told with their videos. I got my news from Kurt Loder, social activism from Rock the Vote, dry humping skills from The Grind, tolerance from Real World, sex advice from Love Line, and my appreciation of sarcasm and being a social outcast from Daria. ...more
I was also born in '81 and really did grow up watching MTV. I miss the old MTV. =( Now I have ...more

Gaga Ain't No Lady

I’m a little late on this one, I know.  Actually, what I’m about to discuss has been bothering me for a while and really reached a peak at the American Idol Finale a couple of weeks back.  I had decided to just let it go, just move on, but I can’t.  I have to “Express Myself” (note the Madonna reference) and then, hopefully, I can get on with my life. It seems that everybody is ‘gaga’ over Lady Gaga right now.  That is no surprise.  I’ve been on the planet long enough now to recognize a marketing phenomenon when I see one.  They come, some stay, som...more

Yikes, thankfully, I missed that performance.

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards Recap: Am I Too Old for This Sh*t?

You know when you are sitting there, doing your taxes and researching life insurance premiums, thinking to yourself, I am such an adult right now, how awesome and mature am I?And then, you turn on the television to watch C-Span, and as you are flipping around, you see an ad for the MTV Movie Awards, and you are all, ugh, like MTV is even still on the air, they don't even know what good music is anymore, it's just noise.  hosted by Jason Sudeikis......more

Reality tv shaping opinions?

Hulu Plus is now on xbox, and when I realized that the first 4 seasons of the Real World were available, my heart literally jumped. The first season of the Real World was the first tv show I really loved. It was with that season that my love of New York City was born. I was about 10 or 11 when the show first aired, and I thought these people were the epitome of cool. I realize now that the oldest cast member was 3 years younger than I am now, but watching the show again, they STILL seem crazy smart and "with it". I almost hate to admit it, but that season shaped a lot of my opinions....more

Reality of Life

Once again, I am reminded that we are raising a generation of whiners.  On the news today, they are talking about the complaints coming from recent SAT-takers that a question was not appropriate or fair or something like that.  Apparently, there was a question on the SAT asking respondents to write about whether or not reality television is "harmful".  The examinees' beef is that they could not eloquently respond to this question because they are too busy studying for their exams, the highly motivated scholars that they are, to have time for watching reality TV....more
