That dubious gift of an hour...

I'm still getting over the blessing of that extra hour I got on Sunday. Daylight Saving for 2015 ended Nov. 1, and I am still adjusting my sleep patterns. "Fall back" seemed like such a gift -- an extra hour and on the weekend, no less. But come Monday morning, I was wide awake at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, 3:45. This morning I managed sleep until 4 a.m. ...more

Until you know, you don't know

I have been an avid reader my entire life. From the time I was a little girl I loved nothing more than to curl up with a good book.  I remember begging my parents to let me stay up just a little bit longer to finish one more chapter.  When I thought they were safely back downstairs or fast asleep I would turn on the light by my bed and read some more....more

Disturbing the waters of our lives

I can’t stop thinking of you…. Although I want to…. I just really want to know what you were thinking? Were you even thinking? Probably not. You slammed into me so hard. I literally didn’t know what hit me. One minute I was driving home from work on the parkway, traffic flowing nicely, and then BAM! My entire body lunged forward. I heard the crash. But I was still in disbelief. I had no warning it was coming as you plowed into my rear....more

Fly away with me....

“Oh, no…. Not another one,” I said to myself, as the siren blasted in my office.  I grabbed my keys, phone, coat and bag, and walked into the large room where most of the team sat.  “Come on, we got to go,” I instructed them. “Ugh, again” one of the girls groaned. ...more

End of Summer

Stopped at the beach this morning on our way through to somewhere else. It was the first morning of waking up to frost on the windshield and although the weather gurus are promising summer-like temperatures this weekend, the writing is clearly on the wall. Winter will soon descend and, for the next five months, we'll be imprisoned by walls of startling cold, white air and mounds, upon mounds of snow and ice....more

It has started to get cold.  The kind of cold that means that reading outside at night requires a fire. And a sweatshirt.  And fuzzy socks.  And my husband’s slippers....more

Tea Leaves and What to Wear When We're Dead

My mother worked while I was growing up.  Our sitter, Nanny B., introduced me to Another World, corn dogs, and the food counter at Zellers.  When I went home to visit my mom this week, Nanny B. offered to read my tea leaves.  For 20 years after she was our sitter, B. worked as the house keeper and cook at the rectory of the RC church in our town.  It figures that she reads tea leaves....more
