I'm Zen With That

Featured NaBloPoMo Post

In truth I'm not, but I'd like to be. Or rather, I like the idea of it. Whatever "it" is. The "zen" part I mean. I assume it means to accept and be at peace with what's around you. I'd like to imagine that's what it means. I could look it up, but I might find I'm disappointed with the actual definition. My definition has, as Stephen Colbert says, a truthiness about it. It may in fact be wrong, but facts are over rated. Besides, I doubt the world's most important endeavours were ever attempted with all the facts in place first.  Read more >

Kicking Off 2012 in Disciplined Style

Featured NaBloPoMo Post

It's not quite 2012 yet, but as the year winds to a close I'm starting to think the usual year-end resolution-type thoughts - you know, deciding where and who I want to be at this time next year, and coming up with concrete things I can do (and, conversely, things I most definitely do NOT want to do!) to help me get there.  Read more >

Cue "Eye of the Tiger" playing on my iPod. We'll call it mood music, because today's post is all about what I've learned participating in National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) through BlogHer. Get comfortable, grab some Ramen noodles (kudos if you get the reference) and let's rehash all the things I've learned through this process.  Read more >

What I Learned from Doing NaBloPoMo and Blogging Daily

Laptop in the bathroom

Well, here we are, folks. At the halfway point. Fifteen posts down, fifteen more to go. It certainly hasn't been a piece of cake, but I honestly didn't expect that it would be. And while I might not always subscribe to the notion that the best things in life are borne out of struggle and pain, there is certainly some merit to the philosophy that the more challenging the task, the more pride experienced when that task is completed. That certainly has been the case for me with this writing/blogging exercise.  Read more >

On Coming Out and 'Glee'

When I graduated from Grinnell College with my B.A. in psychology, I was 22 years old and my only work experience was filing card catalog cards and setting up projectors for professors. I needed a job.My girlfriend was a year younger than me and I wanted to stay in Grinnell. The only job I could find was working at the Jasper County Care Facility, a massive facility for people with severe mental and physical disabilities. The facility was located in nearby Newton. Grinnell was a college town. Newton was not. The people of Grinnell were open-minded. The people of Newton were not.  Read more >

What Bloggers Can Learn from Marathon Runners

Marathon Runners

We're now entering the first full week of NaBloPoMo -- seven days stretch out before you, and you steel yourself for the strain of daily blogging. And then you make the mistake of glancing at the calendar and seeing the other three weeks still ahead after this one. That's when it begins: the flutter of panic, the drooping of the eyes, the sudden desire the press your face into the pillow and go to sleep. That overwhelming sense that you should step away from the computer.  Read more >
