FDOH medical advisory on amoeba applies to all freshwater swim areas; risk may be greater than perceived

Florida Department of Health (DOH) Surgeon General Ana M. Viamonte Ros has issued a medical advisory for all freshwater swimming areas in the state of Florida. Two probable human cases of Amoebic Encephalitis have been identified in Central Florida residents since August, and there is a heightened concern that additional residents may become ill. BREAKING NEWS: FDOH suspects another case of amoebic encephalitis in Central Florida

BREAKING NEWS The Florida Department of Health, with the Osceola and Orange County Health Departments, says there is a probable case of amoebic encephalitis that resulted in a Florida child’s death. This is believed to be the second case in Central Florida this summer. DOH has offered safety tips to decrease risk of infection by this organism. Naegleria fowleri thrives in all freshwater bodies as the temperature rises.
