Spring Break? More like Spring Breakdown

Sooooo.  Yeah.  Our week started off with a bang.  I actually had spent some time scheduling play dates.  In advance. Gasp!  The shock! ...more

The best learning time for infants? Just before a nap

Researchers studied how sleep affected learning and memory skills for 216 infants (6-12 months). They went to each baby's house twice within 4-24 hours. The first time, they showed the babies hwo to remove and play with a mitten that was on a hand puppet. The second time, they watched to see if the babies would remember how it works: removing and playing with the mitten. They found that the babies who had a 30-minute nap within 4 hours of learning the mitten task had better memory recall than the babies who hadn't napped. ...more

to relax…HAH!Although Jim attempts to put it out of his mind, I know I have to start putting things together for the trek back to the city, something which truly sucks.I will get the girls out a few more times, try to soak the few flowers I have, and wait. If I manage to get a nap out of it, the better. The sad part is that even though I see the end in sight, it always feels five million miles away on a Sunday afternoon.Regardless, I am going to try to get the most out of the rest of the day.Have an awesome week!...more

Not a Napper

I am not the type of person who takes naps.  For some reason, I just cannot seem to lay down at a random time during the day and fall asleep.  I envy those who can, but I've never quite learned the knack.Yesterday I actually took a nap.  I was so exhausted, I fell asleep while reading for about an hour.  When I woke up, however, I didn't have that refreshed feeling everyone talks about. ...more

Toddler Tricks - 63: You'll Ruin It

Problem: When my kids were younger, they had an obsession with wearing shoes. They always wanted to be wearing shoes. It got to the point where they even begged to nap in them. These days, they're good with shoes on or off, but sometimes they still want inappropriate things at nap time, like their princess dresses, or necklaces, or some hard plastic dolls. You don't want to start nap off with a screamfest, so what do you do? SOLUTION:...more

Sweet, Sweet Sleep

What is it about a clean home, eucalyptus spearmint wafting from the nearby outlet (courtesy of Bath & Body Works’ Wallflower) and two quiet children off doing their own thing upstairs, that makes me so… restless! I feel like I should be doing something, other than doing nothing.  That’s crazy, right? Having a few moments to myself to do absolutely nothing and feel oh, so wrong about it. How many times have I longed for ten minutes of peace and quiet during times of chaos? Did I really want that or was the idea of it so appealing....more

Why sleep matters even more to ADHD kids

My kids (3 and 5) still nap on my days - even at daycare & kindergarten. I know they need more sleep than what they get at night but I haven't had a lot of luck getting them to fall asleep earlier. But this new study might be enough to push me back into trying! The March 1 issue of SLEEP (journal) had a piece about a new study showing that kids with ADHD had a really hard time "remaining vigilant and attentive" after losing less than one hour of nightly sleep for a week....more
