SuperKlutz and Other Nicknames

My family has an appalling habit: appalling nicknames. When I was a kid, I had some nicknames that I didn't mind so much. One was "Cubby," after the little guy in the Mouseketeers.(1) As I got older and my character and personal traits became more evident, I acquired another one.SuperKlutz....more

NaBloPoMo Day 29: Being Uncle Chester

It was S.Hooligan, naturally, who came up with the idea of calling me Chester. I remember it vividly. We were in a local antique mall in September, 2009. S. was standing up in the basket of a grocery cart, loudly proclaiming the "secret" gift she was going to make for Grandma's birthday....more

Name Flame or Why I Hate My Name

When my ex-husband’s mother Derba was born, she was meant to be called “Debra,” however, due to a clerical error by the registrar, the birth certificate read “Derba.” Her parents never disputed the typo and chose instead to stick with Derba. It was a story she told often....more

Terms of Endearment: Nicknames great and small

My daugher got her first nickname right after her first sonogram. Still in the doctor's office, I snapped a photo of the scan on my phone and e-mailed it to my husband. "Congratulations," he wrote back. "It's a fractal." And so she was called for the next few months. Also popular before she was born were "bean," and "Fetelow," a really ingenious combination of fetus and my last name first coined by a dear friend. ...more
