Why Do We Shop Where We Do?

Why do we shop where we do, in certain stores no matter what? And why do we go out of our way to avoid shopping in other places, despite convenience? The other day, the Accidental Locavore was in Quattro's the butcher up in the country (they also do the Union Square Greenmarket on Saturdays)....more

Black Enough For You?

Last week I joined an online community that is an offshoot of a website dedicated to a radio show. This show and its host and co-host are well known and well liked in the black community. I often tune in on the drive home from work and I’m always impressed with the host’s efforts to encourage his audience towards effective networking and entrepreneurial success.  Because I’d been hearing him talk about his online communities for years, I decided to check one out....more

When bad hair dye happens to good people

I am one of those moms who can speak up for her kids when something goes wrong, but for myself--silence. Even worse, I have been known to say thank you for really bad service.Last week I went to the salon for partial highlights. Somehow the partial highlights turned into full. The "a few brown highlights here and there" idea ended up making my naturally blond hair turn an ashy brown with a few blond highlights....more

(VIDEO) Oprah Talks to Barbara Walters on Friendship, Rumors, Stedman

The rumors are true. Well, one rumor. Everyone cries when they are interviewed by Barbara Walters. Or, at least Oprah did even though she said she really didn't want to do so. In the interview set to air tonight, Oprah let down her guard and talked about herself and her relationships, something we don't always get to hear about as she's usually doing the interviewing. ...more

I'm Not Oprah

Did you watch Oprah's very last ever Favorite Things show the other day? I did. I watched both of them, Friday and Monday. Like so many people, I've dreamed of being on that show for years. And as those last two gifting frenzies rolled before my eyes, I was a little bit sad that my chance to be there was really, officially over. Not that I ever thought I'd actually get there, but knowing there was still the teensiest possibility was fun....more

Stages of Grief to Survive Oprah's Favorite Things 2-Part Extravaganza

Oh, Oprah!  I thought The Great One might not feature her annual Favorite Things episode this year, as she cancelled it in 2009 because of the struggling economy.  But surprise!  Oprah couldn't resist playing Santa on her show one final time, so last Friday she aired Part 1 the swan song special edition of her traditional gift extravaganza, and Part 2 airs today.  Two hours, two audiences, thousands and thousands of dollars in gifts. I guess according to the Oprah Index, the economy is healed! ...more

Lisa Marie Presley Breaks Her Silence about Michael Jackson to Oprah

Lisa Marie Presley's interview with Oprah last week gave the public a rare look into her relationship with Michael Jackson and how even she didn't fully understand it until after his untimely death, a year and a half ago.I gotta tell you, Lisa Marie Presley has always kind of turned me off.  I don't know if it's the monotone voice, the retro-sixties eye makeup or the lack of public charisma, but I've never found myself very interested in her life.  That is until she married Michael Jackson....more
