So ... Now I'm a Parent?

the past 6 weeks have had me reflecting on this journey that jp and i have gotten ourselves on. we jumped on a fast moving train and 6 short weeks ago we were welcomed into a very special club of “motherhood.” i’ve been thinking of what it means to be a parent and trying to really let that feeling … that notion … sink in. what does it mean to be a parent? is that something i’m supposed to feel the minute i laid my eyes on my little girls? or is it something that evolves, and is constantly changing as life moves on? i think it’s both....more

Don't worry about your children leaving for college, they'll be fine!

As an alumni and parent of an undergraduate at UCLA, I was thrilled to be featured in the UCLA Parents and Family Program's Bruinlink, the newsletter for the parents of new Bruins. Your student’s next chapter in life has officially begun, so what does that mean for you?...more

How To Get Your Kids To Brush Their Teeth

Variations on the Theme of Love: What It Looks Like Now

“There’s nothing new under the sun.” I remember my mom saying this often when we were growing up. And really, it’s true, and I’m not just saying that because as a mother myself I am legally obligated to maintain the illusion that everything that comes out of the maternal collective’s mouth is platinum. The more I grow and experience, the more I’m struck with that comfortably novel feeling of deja vu, that electric hair-standing-up-on-the-back-of-my-neck thrill that I’ve been somewhere before. ...more

100% In or Out

Around a year ago, I was in a dark place. I wasn't happy on any kind of consistent basis. My marriage was struggling, with what felt like more downs than ups. I was having a tough time connecting with my kids, with some days feeling good and others feeling tedious and impossible. ...more

How I Knew My Man Would Make An Awesome Dad

I am one very lucky woman. I had solid proof: children and dogs love this man! There's some magical calming and reassuring energy about him that just draws them in--even the ones who don't know him at all....more

Why I’ve stopped blaming the media for airbrushed pictures

Having a daughter is a beautiful thing. It’s also a frightening thing.Or so I’m told…I’m told that she will grow up in a world that tells her she isn’t skinny enough, in a society that screams she isn’t pretty enough.I’m told that celebrities create an unnatainable standard of beauty that my daughter won’t be able to live up to.Magazine’s will photoshop images and imprint an idea of perfection on my young daughter’s mind....more

Meeting Mr. McFeely

Last week while C was watching PBS Kids, one of the commercials* mentioned that there was going to be a character meet-and-greet about an hour from our home. Now, I wrote a lot during my pregnancy that I was very wary of what I like to call “kid culture.” I refuse to eat at any restaurant featuring  a ball pit, and the idea of listening to The Wiggles in place of The Beatles or even Passion Pit just because it’s “kid-friendly” tears at my soul a little. We are a one-dinner family; if I can help it, I don’t make one meal for the grownups and another for the kid....more
Oh my! I would have melted into a giant puddle of public tears and gah! I am almost in tears ...more

Isn't it Romantic

The speed at which life moves never ceases to amaze me. It seems like just yesterday that I was anxiously awaiting Valentine’s Day because I had a feeling my boyfriend was going to propose. That was 22 years ago. And now that boyfriend is my husband of almost 21 years and the father of my three children.I was thinking of how far we had come from that younger couple who was planning our life together, when I heard Joe yell at our firstborn, “Tom, don’t kill your brother and don’t call him a pest.”...more
