According to rough calculations, I’ve had my menstrual period 340 times in my life, and still, every 28 days, like clockwork, I’m surprised. Despite my regularity, with the date long predicted, every month, it’s like we’re meeting for the first time. I don’t think there's ever been a time when I’ve gone to wipe, saw the smear of bright red and haven’t thought, for a split-second, “maybe I’m bleeding out.”
I remember the day my period started for the first time. I was 12 and other than hearing the vague and cryptic comments from my friends at school and an older sister who had shared a little bit about their own experiences with me, I was woefully unprepared.
I have good parents whom I love dearly, but I think there was a whole generation of young girls who were as unprepared for this life event as I was, because menstruation wasn't something we talked about.
I watched the homeless woman as I waited to cross the street. She sat with her head in her hands, shaking slightly. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen her around–she usually walks the blocks near the building where I work, with a vacant look in her eyes that says that somewhere, sometime, something worse than living on the streets happened to her. I had to pass her to get to my office; I thought about ducking into the breakfast joint down the street and grabbing her a biscuit. As I approached, however, I saw her real need....more
Before the 50 Shades movie premiered, uproar ensued because the director hadn’t considered including the infamous tampon scene in the movie. People either felt outrage at the missed opportunity to embrace period sex, periods, and women’s bodies or disgust over the scene itself. These reactions reinforced the mystery surrounding period sex so today I’m pulling back the curtain to show why period sex is something to consider and how to do it effortlessly....more
Chances are that if you haven’t gotten your period back before you return to work, it will come back once you are back to work. You need to know a few things about Flow.First, Flow messes with your supply. Usually, right around when you are ovulating (though some women experience this at the beginning of their periods instead), your supply will dip somewhat and your nipples will get a little sore. Your period probably won’t be regular when you first get it back, so you may not know when you ovulate, but a dip in supply may be one indication....more

Did you know that there are more than 50 different kinds of birth control pills, and even more methods of birth control? So many options, so many factors to consider! But, along with all the different side effects of birth control, many women rarely consider the nutritional consequences of the various methods. Unfortunately, depending on the method, there may be bone health consequences (decreased bone density can lead to osteoporosis and fractures later in life), weight effects, or medication interactions....more
As some of you may recall, I'm doing some work with Mother Nature Partnership, a fabulous organization providing women in rural Cameroon with reproductive health education and hygienic, reusable menstrual cups to replace the dangerous, unhygienic, and just all-around uncomfortable and inconvenient methods of managing their periods.
Obviously I think this project is brilliant and am a big fan of menstrual cups because there are fewer chemicals in the body and fewer tampons in the landfill. At least, I was a big fan of them in theory.
Despite talking them up all over the Internet and to anyone who didn't look ready to keel over from squeamishness in person for the past couple of months, I had yet to actually use one myself.
HelloFlo—a start-up that offers a starter kit of supplies and information about menstruation for young women, as well as subscriptions for monthly care packages—went viral last year with the very funny video "The Camp Gyno," about a girl who is the first to get her period while at summer camp.
It's whispered from woman to woman between bathroom stalls, a slight tinge of oh shit in the undertone: Do you have a tampon? From the New Jersey Turnpike to a Chili's in Sacramento, thousands of women find themselves daily with their panties around their ankles, cursing the fact that they're miles from their tampon stash.
