What I Learned About Polyamory From a Perfect Stranger

Until last week, I had never heard of the term "polyamorous", let alone that such a relationship existed. That all changed when I met "Rachel" from Canada recently at a conference I attended in Los Angeles. This particular career enriching workshop drew people from all parts of the world, and my colleagues hailed from England, Australia, Uruguay, Japan, Canada, Philippines, and from all over the US....more

What is Polygamy?

With the growing popularity of the TV show Sister Wives, there has been much talk lately about polygamy and what it really is. There is a widely held misconception of polygamy. Contrary to popular belief, polygamy is not a man having more than one wife....Read More...more

Who Owns The Term Mormon?

Polygamy is a touchy subject for many Mormons.  Mention the word polygamy to a faithful Mormon and you will observe an almost universal knee-jerk reaction – an explanation that Mormons do not practice polygamy and that polygamist groups covered in mainstream media are not Mormon.  To counter the image of polygamy, Mormon authorities made an unsuccessful attempt to trademark the term “Mormon”, as an attempt to prevent fundamenta...more

To Be A Woman

For the past few weeks, I haven't been able to shut up about the show Sister Wives. I love it. I think it's interesting and heartwarming, but most of all, I love the wives. Far from the underage, docile slave-wives of Warren Jeffs' ilk, these women are out-spoken, professional (two work outside the home), and smart. They made the decision to live in a polygamous family, but they have no intention of forcing it on their children. I have a lot of respect for their live-and-let live attitude when it comes to other "alternative" lifestyles. ...more

"sister-wives" a review

My last year of college I wrote a rather lengthy thesis, where after many interviews and  much reading,  I came to believe  a rather simple idea:  many women who practice patriarchal forms of a variety of religions, understand their practice in terms of particularity within  universality....more

Sister Wives?

There's a new show on TLC called Sister Wives, about a polygamist family. There's the Dad, 3 wives, and 12 kids with one on the way. I'm super easy going with the lifestyles of other people. If this is what these people truly want, that's all fine with me. All of the wives grew up in this type of family, so they knew what they were doing. None of them were child brides and anything like that. And shockingly enough, the kids seem well adjusted and happy....more

TLC's "Sister Wives" Brings Polygamy to Reality TV

When it comes to polygamy or men with multiple wives, you can put me down solidly on the side of thinking: WTF!? My feminist hackles rise, my righteous indignation flares and I start to spout off about religions created by men, run by men, that promote men presiding over multiple women, keeping those women in degradation and oppression. ...more

Two Religious Leaders Charged with Polygamy in Canada

Winston Blackmore and James Oler, two rival leaders in Bountiful, BC, have been arrested and charged with polygamy. In the same breath that people were reporting the news they were predicting that this case would end up before the Supreme Court. Though charges are rare polygamy is illegal in Canada. Sorta. Kinda. Maybe? ...more

Charter of Rights vs. Criminal Code in Bountiful, BC

Yesterday in the province of British Columbia Canada, Attorney General Wally Opan spoke to the media and announced that the RCMP has made two arrests in a polygamist community of Bountiful BC. The two arrests came after a two decades of watching the controversial Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints leaders Winston Blackmore and James Oler. No doubt this these arrests will set of a shit storm of political debate between the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Criminal Code. ...more
