It's The End Of The World As We Know It, And I Look Fine

According to the ancient Mayan calendar, the world is scheduled to come to an end on December 21, 2012.  I don't know about you, but I plan to spend my remaining two months studying up on what to expect when you're being exterminated. I will accomplish this by watching the current crop of post apocalyptic television programs, which naturally are just loaded with helpful information.  The Walking Dead  (AMC) teaches us you need to have a Zombie escape plan....more
This is all very useful information. Apparently television isn't such a waste of time after ...more

Premature Revolution

I knew that things political were getting a little dicey. Views on the current struggle under which our nation is laboring are pointed at least. In some cases they are deadly. ...more

Courageous Journalism Allows Us to Get the Real News from Egypt

Imagine that one day you're watching CNN and a breaking news story comes on saying that Diane Sawyer, anchor of ABC's World News with Diane Sawyer, has suddenly quit.  In an interview, Sawyer says the reason she quit was because ABC was demanding, via the White House, that she read a story at the beginning of every newscast that says citizens are rioting in the streets of New York and the National Guard must be called in to restore order. The problem is the streets of New York are quiet. ...more

Finding my Voice...and I'm Frustrated, Scared and Mad

So, I kept putting off a new blog.  I started to let the thoughts of "no one really cares about what is going on in my life but me" stop me each time I had a new idea.  It's true.  I'm not that interesting.  My life probably mirrors many other people's lives out there, but I do have a couple of things I am passionate enough about to start bringing to light....more

I really appreciate that quote. I had not known about the Earth documentary! But I am not ...more

Ellen Degeneres Just Rocked the Fashion World

Sure it's only Cover Girl and their makeup is shite. But still, it's a major fashion flip - they took someone mature, with a real brain, with real unique style and beauty and made her a COVER GIRL? I'm thrilled- I'm delighted. I seriously almost CRIED I was so touched. ...more

I have to say they are finally getting it right.   Ellen will be a great spoke person for ...more

We're going to Nicaragua - Help us Revolutionize a Nation

Right now, Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the western hemisphere. It's a third world country, complete with shacks made out of trash and little-to-no infrastructure. So why would we relocate our family of four to a place like this? The short answer is to build a school in New Jerusalem, but it is so much more than that. So here's the vision... Take a child who is about 4 years old and put him in a Christian preschool. ...more

Pluto In Capricorn: A Zodiac In Revolution

Just because Pluto transitioned from "planet" to "minor planet 134340" back in 2006, don't think Pluto's astrological influence has been downgraded. In fact, as though to prove its ongoing relevance, Pluto will be provoking sizable transition across the zodiac, beginning this Friday, January 25th. ...more

Is 2007 the year for a Beauty Revolution?

When I started work on Hijas Americanas in early 2006, there wasn’t much talk of shaking up America’s beauty standard. I researched, interviewed wonderful, forthright women, and wrote while taking “study breaks” on the net—seeing bloggers and their commentators critique a perceived added pound on Kelly Clarkson or spend countless internet pages dissecting J.Lo’s darker hair color. But I was speaking each day to women who inspired me and reading web surveys of women who stole my heart. Far more Latinas came forward, offering their stories, than I could have ever imagined. ...more

2007 Cheers

In the fall of 2006, I became convinced that we were on the precipe of a beauty and body standard revolution. That the standards were about to be shaken up in a very real way. We're still warming to that revolution, but I believe it is working up it's speed (look for my revolution posting later this week). Here are some of the things that I remember from 2007 that gave the revolution steam. Check them out here and if you want the full story on any of these, head to http://hijasamericanas.wordpress.com for live links. Here's to at least doubling the list of cheers in 2008! ...more

Five Beauty & Body Resolution Revolutions for 2008

I'm a resolver. A lister. A planner. A dreamer. A must do better-er. And I am also a supporter of women, a cheerleader (in the theoretical sense. I tried out for cheerleading against my better judgment just once in 6th grade. I did it because I am a supporter of women—was so even then—and one of my good friends REALLY wanted to be a cheerleader but wouldn’t try out alone. So, I attended all the practices and then promptly ran into the judge’s table as I finished up my cartwheel, cartwheel, round-off during the first leg of the tryouts. Needless to say, I wasn’t invited back. ...more
