Winner!

First time I have ever entered a fleece judging contest.  What do you know?Bunny, our 2.5 year old Shetland ewe, won Class Champion in the "Medium" Wool Weight at the Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival this past month.  I'm always saying that it's a good thing she has such a beautiful fleece, otherwise I wouldn't be able to find any redeeming value in her as she is skiddish, loud, and unfriendly.  A rare ewe in my flock(though she's just like her mother, Winky.)Well, I guess she showed me that she's got the right to baa if she wants to.  ...more

Turn An Obstacles Into A Triumph

We are constantly told to make lemonade out of lemons and to look on the bright side of life. Well, sometimes the glass is just half empty and the lemons are only giving you seeds.  In order to come around and see life in a positive light again you may need to walk thru the darkness first....more

Creative Summer Way To Get Kids To Behave

Summer is in full swing in our household.  Both of the kidlets are in day camp and having a grand old-time of “no more pencils, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks!”  It also seems like the end-of-school dismissal bell has rung in our own home with the kidlets rebelling against mom and dad concerning all things routine, rules and discipline.   It also doesn’t take much time or effort these days for brother and sister to turn against each other as well.  Sometimes it’s a miracle for them to be in the same room for five minutes without any arguing, screaming ...more

What Makes Teaching Worthwhile

Occasionally, my students surprise me. Like when they exclaim in June, after a year of calling me Mrs., “You’re married?!” Or, when they announce, “My feet smell good today.” (They definitely did not smell good that day.) I say, “Oh?” and they say, “Yeah, I put perfume on them this morning.” Or, when given permission to go rinse out their mouth because they have been hacking incessantly, they head to the hand sanitizer machine, and then wonder why I am shouting STOP across the room in horror. ...more

The Miraculously Fantastically Magical Sticker

Never-- and I mean NEVER-- underestimate the power of a sticker. No, that's not a typo.  I meant to write "sticker".  And by sticker, I do not mean "a pointy-ended object with which to poke at things".  The sticker to which I refer could more aptly be described as "cute, colorful, sticky-paper praise"....more

Working For a Harvest

Recently, I was encouraged by a reader with this verse: 'Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest.'  Proverbs 14 v 4.  This is one of those verses, which if taken at face value, appears to be only applicable to farmers.  But, like most of Proverbs, there is a deeper meaning.  We all like things to be clean, yes?  A stable without an oxen is clean.  A life without difficulties is straight-forward.   ...more
