It's lonely out here: planning for a natural childbirth

Who knew we were such a nation of drug pushers? Here is the conversation I am having at least once a day, with moms and non-moms alike. Them: “Are you taking childbirth classes”? Me: “Yes, I’m taking hypnobirthing. I want to have a natural childbirth.” Them: “Good luck with that (wink wink). Or, “Yeah I did too, you’ll get over it.” Or: “You’re nuts! Take the drugs”!

Stuck between a doula and a hard place

I’m not going to watch the Ricki Lake video. I'm not giving birth at home. But nor am I comfortable with a purely medical birth. In an ideal world, I think, I would have my baby in a birthing clinic, with a midwife. With yogic breathing and candles, maybe water. And definitely no drugs. But as a first-timer with a high anxiety level, that doesn't feel like an option. I am with one of the best practices in my city, and will give birth at one of the best maternity hospitals in the world.

AMA To Ricki Lake: No More Babies Born In Bathtubs, Please (Ricki Lake to AMA: Stuff It)

Ricki Lake gave birth to her second child at home, in her bathtub. Which is great, but I almost did her one better by very nearly giving birth in the front seat of my husband's car while we sped down the highway at close to twice the legal speed limit. However, almost giving birth in a speeding motor vehicle - which, can I say?

High hopes for The Business of Being Born

It's just over a month now until the release of The Business of Being Born to DVD a la Netflix* on Feb. 12, and I, for one, am counting the days. There are 36. As a self-confessed "birth junkie," I've been excited about this movie since I first learned about it back in May of 2007.
