You Can Be Very Successful and Still Be Depressed

The day after news broke that actor Robin Williams died by suicide, a local TV news station interviewed me about my personal experience living with depression. (I like to say “living with depression” because you can still manage it and have a quality life.) Most of the responses to my interview have been positive and encouraging. I received an email from someone I knew from high school. She sang my praises of professional and personal success, especially since I was a black woman raised in East Oakland. She suggested that when I’m depressed to remember the women around the world less fortunate than I am who would give their right arm to have my life because of my achievements. ...more

IVE COME UNSTUCK

Today I'm none the worse after wrestling with restlessness and wordlessness for a few days.  Oh, what a mouthful!  I'm trying to make up for lost time.  I mustn't be too gleeful. I could be sent back into my silence in a nano second. You know how these things can happen....more

Genie is Free

What a sad day. I grew up with Robin Williams. Mork and Mindy was one of our favorite shows. We looked forward to it because we knew we would belly laugh at least once... "Nan Nu Nan Nu!"To imagine now that this man, who was so extremely talented, could have been so troubled as to kill himself is heartbreaking. So many are touched by this tragic news. My daughter is in Disney World as we speak and her reaction was classic."Mom, it is so sad to have the Genie die while you're at Disney."...more

Zelda Williams, I Lost My Dad to Suicide, Too

“I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up.” Sitting at my desk at work, I read the words on my computer from Zelda, Robin Williams’ daughter,  who tweeted about his death. For some reason I decided to look at the clock, I wanted to know what time it was... 8:38 AM. I lasted a little over 12 hours after hearing the news before it finally hit me. The night before, Trey had given me a hug and asked if I was okay. I said yes, which was true at the time but now it was different. Now I was not okay. “I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up.” ...more
