On Fear of Writing and Other Fears – I Discovered a Scared Little Girl

My name is Mare, and I’m afraid of my writing. I’m afraid of this book that is gestating in me. I’m not exactly sure what I’m afraid of but perhaps by the time this wee little blog piece is finished, I may have a clearer mind? Writing can do that. It can shake loose some of the tangled thoughts trapped way back there in the cranium. This fear, it is an interesting creature. It keeps me in bed longer than I need to be. It sends me spinning off into distraction-land in a heartbeat. It keeps me from focusing on my book and is not so helpful....more

The passage

“The person who might take us out of the ice, who might psychically free us… is not necessarily going to be the one to whom we belong. It may be… another of those magical but fleeting events that again came along when we least expected it, an act of kindness from a passing stranger… Whatever it may be, it is a time when [that] spirit, in one way or another, feeds us, pulls us out, shows us the secret passage…” – Clarissa Pinkola Estés  ...more

A mother's day proclamation

“Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, Whether our baptism be of water or of tears!” – Julia Ward Howe  This morning, I went for a long walk with my best friend and her son, grateful to spend this special day with a woman who has been a mentor, role model and sister to me since I was 18. Seeing her as a mother has been a beautiful evolution for me to witness. Although she adds many contributions to the world, this role is among her greatest....more

In the path of a papess

“To discover who she is, a woman must descend into her own depths… It will be her task to experience her pain… the pain of her own unique feeling values calling to her, pressing to emerge. To discover who she is, a woman must trust the places of darkness where she can meet her own deepest nature and give it voice… weaving the threads of her life into a fabric to be named and given… sharing it with the women around her as she comes to a true and certain sense of herself.” – Judith Duerk...more
