You Heard It Here First...

In case you've been wondering......NEVER schedule out-of town travel for college interviews after one or more parents has served as an Election Judge the day before. It is ill-advised and will break up the family. The seventeen and a half hour day with few breaks is a killer, while being nice to so many people is also taxing....more

Remembering is more than just one day

(I wrote this for the Esquimalt News in 2002 for the week after Remembrance Day...the photos at the end are mine, added to this post)The poppies are put away; the rain has set in for good; Canadian Tire money is stronger then the Looney and Christmas music pounds from every store. Remembrance Day provided a long weekend in more ways then one....more

Love is Unselfish

When you hate yourself, you can't love me or anyone else.  I have watched you since we were kids hating who you were and the way you felt, trying to repress who you really are.  No matter how hard you stuff, the soul can't be kept down.  It's time to stop stuffing and be who you are, even if that person is not who I'd hoped you would be.  It's going to be hard, but I love you.  The real you. It will be nice to see you fly again. ...more

Piercing My Nose. Or Not.

This was going to be a story of feminism and self-ownership: The search for my nose began as a child. Mine was round and very unlike my mother's regal Roman nose. My birth father was long gone, but old photographs bore evidence of a nose bent and flattened from repeated breaking, a hazard of soccer and Spanish blood run hot. My nose did not have the narrow British look of my grandmother's nor the prominent Italian bulge of my grandfather's. It had no match, no ancestry, no belonging. ...more

My Christmas gift: A conversation with God.

TheSecondAct Generation after generation, you watched as man did all he could to be right with you.  Cultures all over the world have engaged in sacrifice to make atonement for their sinful humanity.  Your people were no different and you provided a sacrificial system to allow them the same…and this was only a shadow of the wonder to come.  But their sacrifices were but a temporary solution to an eternal problem….that someday we would stand before you to give an account of our life.  All the sacrifices i...more

Ice cream dates were out the window. Eating steaks was also out the window (poor Josh). Lunch? That's what you make each night and pack into a bag so you can take it to work with you. Not in a fancy, cool lunchbox (unless you already have one), but in one of those plastic bags from the grocery store. And you reuse the plastic bag every day until it has jelly smeared down the side of it (cause you're packing PB&J -- or its equivalent -- every day). Our food budget was $40 a week, combined, for the majority of those 3 years. ...more
