Blessed Samhain

Blessed SamhainHappy November all, and I hope you had a wonderful Halloween and Samhain!I’m sure I’ve mentioned before how learning tarot has taken me in and out of witchy circles.  I didn’t mean to learn about witchcraft or paganism when I started learning about tarot, but I did.  Almost immediately I started picking things up from those that I looked to for tarot instruction.  Pretty soon I was actively looking for more information, piecing together tidbits of information, determining if they fit with the previously unnamed beliefs I’ve had for years.  Some didn’t.  Many did. ...more

Whether Samhain, Halloween, All Saints, or Dia de los Muertos...Have a happy one!!      ...more

Growing up Catholic, November 1st meant All Souls Day, although I don't really remember anything in particular happening at school other than going to church.  My sister, 16 years my senior, has more vivid memories and perhaps things had changed some before I entered parochial school.  In recent years I've heard a lot more about the celebrations around Day of the Dead, which sounds like a much more fun way of honoring the deceased.  I have a thing about altars anyway, so the idea of setting one up for departed loved ones...more

Weaving the past, creating the future

When I was a little girl, I was fascinated with the mystery of the world gone by, spending hours in search of relics from the past. I looked through the attic for old letters and photographs, I searched the basement for hidden passageways, I even looked for evidence in the old trees in our backyard. What secrets did those old trees hold? What would they tell me if they could speak?...more

True Creepy Stories - All in a Day's Work

Every year for Samhain I publish accounts of my more charged, and in some cases creepy, spiritual pursuits. The Dead Time is a treasured journey to Solstice, and as it is a time of untime, the shadowed season presents a great opportunity to tell the stories that many who do shamanic work won’t tell–the occasions when things don’t go well or the unseen presents itself unexpectedly. You may recognize some of these accounts from my previous stories, while others are more recent. Enjoy the solitude of encroaching darkness. The light will return soon enough....more

Our Samhain Prayer

Those gone before, you who wish me good, hear me; guide and guard me, and when the time comes, greet me. You are neither blind nor deaf to this life I live; you did yourself once share it. I come to you in love and trust. I seek to honor you. Ancestors, you who came before us and were the roots of our line, we ask you to come again into our lives so that we may share in your wisdom and love. Beloved friends who went before us, we ask you to come again into our lives so that we may once again laugh with you and stand strong together through turmoil. ...more

The Slide into Winter

I spent some time outside tonight and got to enjoy the very beginnings of autumn. This was the first night in a long while that I could be comfortable outside. The bugs aren't as numerous and it's not as humid. It's still getting plenty hot during the day but the summer is just beginning to slow down. I like to think of it as the beginning of the slide into home. The autumn is my favorite time of year; the discomfort of summer eases and, for a while, everything keeps growing. ...more
