What Back-to-School in Newtown, Connecticut Feels Like

Yesterday was the first day of school, and I so remember last year, when I teased my teenagers and mockingly made a video of them heading off to that first milestone day. The most wonderful day of the year for so many working parents! This year is different. ...more

The exquisite pain of Boston and Sandy Hook

I needed to get away from the news yesterday. There were some potentially ugly clouds around here, but they looked like they were all talk so I went for a run. Just as I was rounding the last bend on a loop through a pretty, foresty sorta place I like to go, it started to rain. And then I remembered another time that it had started raining on a sunny day when I was running in that exact same spot: Right after Sandy Hook....more

He also addressed concerns about the diversity of his cabinet appointments, touting the number of women he's appointed to high office, and talked gun control one month after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, saying he'd "vigorously pursue" a meaningful assault-weapons ban. ...more

While the nation grieved, I thought about myself and my own family. It was a selfish thing, but let me explain. You see, my family was affected by a school shooting back before school shootings were all the rage, literally....more
