Just Say No: School Pictures Edition

school picture day

This year, I didn't pre-purchase school pictures. You know the ones. The ones where the photographer says, "Say CHEESE!" and your kid gets a goofy fake grin showing both rows of teeth all the way back to where the wisdom teeth will come in? The ones you have to pay for BEFORE you buy? The cheapest package was $30 or $40. You can get them retaken, but it's a pain. And really -- for three kids' poorly taken pics that we don't even want to give to their own grandparents? I said no.  Read more >

I Was a Bullied Child

Sad Girl

Last week, a young boy was found hanging in his backyard by his sister. He was only 14 years old and had just started high school. He left behind a family, friends and people that cared. He also left behind a bunch of kids that spent a great deal of time doing everything they could to make him miserable. They bullied him, taunted him, brought him to tears and eventually, drove him to take his own life. What kind of kids do this?  Read more >

How To Survive Parents' Night, Together or Apart

teacher

I read in the newspaper the other day that money, addiction and sex are the main causes for divorce.  But I think the reporter overlooked what must be the biggest cause:  Parent’s Night.  There isn’t a couple I know who doesn’t break into hives or involuntary twitching at the mention of having to sit through two hours of assemblies and parent/teacher conferences.   I have seen solid unions reduced to ruins after only an hour of enduring a fifth-grade teacher conference.  They ought to consider adding something in the vows about committing to Parent’s Night.  Read more >

Homeschool vs. Public School: Is There a One Size Fits All Education Model?

One size fits all education

One of the following stories is true. Can you tell which one it is? (No skipping ahead!) Story 1: I believe in public education. I am a product of public school. I think the education I received up until my high school graduation was an excellent one; I was usually sufficiently challenged, I was given lots of opportunities for both academic enrichment and involvement in other activities, and I headed off to college well-prepared for the rigors that lay ahead. After completing college, I worked for a year, then headed to grad school. I consider myself smart, capable, well-educated, and a perfect example of how public school can work better than many are willing to admit.  Read more >

A Call to Moms! We Make Schools Better

kid in classroom

As I walked my son, Zack, to school on Thursday last week, he and I kept bumping into each other as we made our way up the street. We were both carrying large, unwieldy bags: shopping bags crammed with composition books, sharpened pencils, colored folders, magic markers, colored pencils, plain labels, sanitary wipes, 3 rolls of paper towels, and $6 in an envelope for art supplies. This was not Zack's idea of what he needed to feel prepared for school that first day: this is what the teachers suggested the classroom might need, which they did not have the funds to purchase.  Read more >

Dear Teacher, I Am "That Parent"

classroom

That's right, people. That would be me. I am the parent who called the preschool teacher because her daughter came home in tears, and I needed to know why. I am the parent who introduces letter and number recognition to two-year olds. I am That Parent, whose preschooler will read, whose kindergartener will write, whose children will understand basic math before Grade One.  Read more >

Should I Save My Kid From An Obnoxious Classmate?

Lego Clown

My son starts the fifth grade next week and I just found out that a boy we can’t stand will be in his class. This boy is loud, disruptive and picks on all of the kids (including mine.) I really, really don’t want my son to have to deal with him for an entire year. I’m thinking about talking to the principal and asking to have my son put into another class, but my husband says I’m being ridiculous and to just deal with it. Am I overreacting?  Read more >

My Name, LPN… Go Ahead & Start Calling Me Nurse

Nursing

I can see a light at the end of this long tunnel called Nursing School. In seven short months I will have finished my Associate’s Degree in Nursing. And in five days I will be eligible to sit for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) state boards. That is if I make it through the next five days…  Read more >
