I Just Caught a Glimpse of Dystopia

And believe me, it wasn't pretty.  The Sears in our already substandard rural mall is closing.  Ours is one of 79 stores in the Sears Holding Corporation that is closing after a disappointing holiday shopping season. The store is currently liquidating its merchandise.  Electronics and home appliances are marked down between 25-50%.  Seasonal items, such as clothing, are marked anywhere from 50-75%....more

Aches on a Plane

I have just returned from a trip across country that involved air travel.  I’m exhausted, I’m dehydrated (do they purposely suck all the moisture out of the air on the plane?), and I’m cranky.  No doubt my rants here are related to my current physiological and psychological state but, actually, these thoughts are not new.  Every time I fly I think the same things and I need to vent so that I can get on with my life.  You know, I’m OK with the security checks.  In fact, I was radiated yesterday in one of the full body scans.  Not something I would do for...more

Tools - What is a girl to do?

It can be so annoying when your husband won't fix certain things in the house -- I understand he works a lot, but I'm raising 2 kids. I need a break too. For example, we have a hole in the wall from my oldest son throwing his baseball in to it. I can't stand to look at it and I don't want to just put a picture where the hole is. I actually want to fix it. Luckily for me (and for him), some retailers have been coming out with mobile technology stuff to help us out. Again -- I'm on this mobile app kick -- thanks to my friend for teaching me how to use it....more

Spring 2011 Eco Fashion-Vancouver Style-

Although you would never know it from the butt kicking of a winter that mother nature is handing to us right now, spring is right around the corner. That means… Spring Fashions!! Yay! Just looking at the pastel colors makes me feel like there is a light at the end of this frosty, frosty tunnel. With  Eco Fashion week Vancouver just 6 sleeps away, now is a great time to start planning for spring....more

A Game Day Mess? Maybe This will help

So Long, Suckers: "It Creature" Zombies Leave Vampires in the Lurch

Ever since the publication of a certain 2005 novel in which a sparkly centarian disguised as a teen heartthrob seduced a dead-eyed transfer student in a tree (hint for those living underground, or in exile -- it rhymes with “Schmilight”), vampires have ruled the pop culture landscape, spawning TV shows, indie-rock bands, and some very creepy Etsy products. But if recent media trends are any indication, there’s a new It Creature swaying stiffly into town. ...more

Another good reason to keep newspapers alive - for the sales circulars

I spend hours online but I’m still a newspaper junkie.  Online shopping lets me research anything I’m thinking about buying.  And then there are all the juicy comments which are often called "reviews."  Ha!   I start off examining customers’ comments and then I stop at a review where someone is telling a harrowing story about exactly what happened the night they brought their new mattress home. Sagging!  Sides collapsing!  Back pain! Co-sleepers sniping at each other in the morning! ...more
