That's It--I'm taking away the Atlas!

Have you ever threatened to take away a book in the heat of disciplining your child? I have. Just last week, I told my son that if he didn’t start behaving at school, I was going to take away his National Geographic 2009 World Atlas. This was big stuff—he knew I must be serious if I was threatening to withhold his atlas. You probably think I’m joking. I wish. My boy has a passion for books, an unslakeable thirst for knowledge, and an inexplicably accurate and detailed memory....more

#TSAFAIL: It's Not Funny Any More

Today, DHS's Napolitano's response to the crotchbomber: "We're looking to make sure that this sort of incident cannot recur." But the TSA's response to Abdulmutalib's attempt makes one thing clear: We must stop pretending the TSA is making us safer. -- Gizmodo ...more

Dear TSA: Please Don't Take Our Underwear

So I imagine I'm not alone in worrying about the recent airline terrorist exploding underpants bomb attempt and subsequent discussions about tighter TSA restrictions for arline cabin activity. Buzz has included possible rule changes limiting bathroom or out-of-seat breaks at the end of flights and fewer allowed carry-ons and electronics. If you really want to see violence, take away all of the laptops and iPods that we use to cope with the cattle call of airplane travel. It could get ugly, fast....more

The Latest Act in TSA Security Theater

TSA has learned that an outdated version of our Standard Operating Procedures document had been improperly posted to the Federal Business Opportunities Web site. TSA took swift action to remove the document when this was discovered. The version of the document that was posted was neither implemented nor issued to the workforce. In fact, there have been six newer versions of the document since this version was drafted. Standard Operating Procedures change regularly as intelligence provides information on new threats and we find better ways improve security. ...more

A Year After Mumbai Attacks, Public Scrutiny Exposes Systemic Failures

In the build up to President Obama's first state dinner, news anchors wondered in awe and glee what new surprises --- like the now-immortalized Princess Diana-John Travolta twirl --- the occasion would throw up. Given that their guests were the India Prime Minister and his wife, I didn't expect another dance surprise. ...more

Parking Tickets Ruin Any Day

Parking tickets really blow. I had a test this morning (which was FINE...that is suppose to be in my dry, sarcastic tone) and after I left the business building, I found a stupid parking ticket on my car. It said that I was parked in an unmarked spot. Ok, ONE, I have parked there for the past 2 weeks and never gotten a ticket. TWO, there were lines on the ground. THREE, there is a cement parking block in the grass behind where I parked. UGH. It makes me so mad. ...more
