Let's try something different...

Twelve years ago, I remember a clear, warm evening in San Francisco. I was at the Cheesecake Factory with my best friend. I think we had just come back from a trip to Las Vegas to celebrate her birthday. It was my aunt’s birthday and I had forgotten to call her to wish her a Happy Birthday, but I knew my mom was enjoying the day with her. Early the next morning, I had weird dreams about a brownstone crumbling around me. I was trying to escape. I had my kitten in my arms. We all know what happened next. Fear like I’ve never known coursed through my brain....more

Where Were You On Sept 11, 2001?

Nine days from now marks the 12th anniversary of the most horrible day in the recent history of our nation, the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. Where were you when the Twin Towers fell? I was going through living hell, much like the people of New York, but a different kind....more

That Morning, September 11th

That morning was just about perfect. It was the kind of morning that I'd spent years wishing for, at times never knowing whether it would come to fruition or not.I'd gone through the only routine that mattered anymore.  Sometime around 2a.m., the baby awoke.  He was retrieved by my husband and brought to bed with us.  He nursed and fell back to sleep peacefully after laying on my chest for a bit....more

In the Face of Change, I Still Sent Her to School

She was so incredibly excited to start preschool that morning. With a brother four years older, she already understood what school entailed. 9/11. To move forward not as if nothing had happened, but as if what happened could never change our lives....more

Love, Ramadan and 9/11

The President held a dinner at the White House last month in honor of Ramadan where he discussed the upcoming 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. This year, Ramadan is sandwiched between that anniversary and an epic moment in my personal life, my wedding. As I reflect on these important events, the connection between the two is strikingly obvious: they are both very American. Our wedding was big, fat, and Pakistani. I had six outfits for three days, my groom and I participated in rituals that left our faces yellow with turmeric, my friends performed a hip-hop/Hindi dance medley, and we served possibly the entire variety of South Asian food in the DC tri-state area. ...more

Daddy's "baby" Girl

We have two girls and one boy.  Our first daughter was born on September 11th and my due date with my second daughter was also September 11th.  Crazy, right?  As soon as my OB told me the due date for the second girl she immediately followed it up with, "We'll have to change that date".  I chuckled and told her it would be okay being that I already had a September 11th baby....more
