The 16 Stages of Chopping off Your Hair

1. You become obsessed with a celebrity’s new style. When Jennifer Lawrence debuted her adorable pixie cut last year, I just knew it would look as awesome on me as it did on her....more

New Season. New Hair.

Spring has arrived, and as usual it's that time of the month. Hold the phones, I'm not talking about that time, I mean the time of the month when I ask myself, "What should I do with my hair next?".  (Yes, really this does happen once a month.)...more

Hair and Femininity: I Cut My Hair and Opened My Eyes

I decided to take the leap. My hair wasn't making me look fatter or skinnier or complementing really anything about me -- it's never been my best feature, it is just my damn hair. I felt good about it, I reminded myself, as I crumpled my picture of Michelle Williams in my sweating fists. ...more

I Am NOT My Hair

For my whole life I have always measured my beauty on my hair. When I was a child I wanted long, straight, beautiful "white" hair- which is a tall order considering I have the nappiest, kinkiest hair by nature. So the better part of my childhood was spent in a salon chair, with relaxer in my hair. Once, when I was 13, my mother did an at home relaxing treatment to my hair, and even though it was burning to high heaven- the sign that it's time to wash it out- I just HAD to finishing watching an episode of Frasier; the result, hair- my hair- falling out from the roots and running down the drain. When all was said and done, I was bald 4 inches deep from my hairline. It took years before I could bring myself to watch an episode of Frasier. ...more

The Pixie Cut: Why I Went Short (Would You?)

A few weeks ago I went to a salon, pulled my hair back in a ponytail and asked the hairdresser to cut it off. What she placed in my hand was 15 inches of my hair tied neatly in a yellow hairband. That hair is on its way to Locks of Love, an organization that provides hairpieces to economically disadvantaged children suffering from long term medical hair loss. A friend of mine grows her hair out the requisite 12 inches every couple of years and then cuts it off to donate, and I've always admired her for it....more

Fashion's Tough New Beauty

The final nail in the celebutante coffin is in: the pink-glossed, veloured, Barbie doll look is out and a new, more aggresive beauty is in. We can thank the recession for this; apparently, tough times call for tough broads. ...more

Short is Sweet

I've had short hair for eleven years now and I'll never try to grow it out.   I don't own a hairbrush or a blow dryer but I can still manage to play around with it and have fun. I like to change the color(s) pretty regularly and if my bangs get long enough before a trim, I can pull them to the side with a barrette....more

Short Hair Cuts - Spring Has Sprung

Hey, it's April already.  Time flies, right?  Are you still wearing that tired old long winter coat on top of your head?  Well, c'mon - it's time to get a short hair cut.  Pretty soon, the temps will climb into the uncomfortable range.  The last thing you'll need is a face full of stray strands and a sweat-soaked neck from that mop hanging down.  Short haircuts are the ticket.  Don't wait too long.  To get ideas, I like this short hair cuts website, but there are lots of others out there. ...more

I hate my hair! What to do when you're not happy with your do.

I went to the salon last Friday thinking I'd have my shoulder length hair cut into a bob.  A really short bob; Amalie style.  But, with no bangs.  Probably.  And my hairstylist (my friend Michele who has been cutting my hair since we were both about seventeen) tossed me a Short Hair Styles book while she finished up with the client before me.  "See if there's something you like in there," she said, "I'll be done in a couple minutes."  Partway through the book I found The Cut.  It was so stinkin cute; much shorter than I have ever worn my hair, but, you know, SO many women I know have really great short hair (Hi Susan and Karen and Eden), and so I said What the heck, threw all caution and inhibitions to the wind, and went for it. ...more
