Life at the HOUSE of JOES - or - When it Comes to In-laws, Sometimes Divorce is the Only Way Out - 2

When my ex-husband’s mother Derba was born, she was meant to be called “Debra,” however, due to a clerical error by the registrar, the birth certificate read “Derba.” Her parents never disputed the typo and chose instead to stick with Derba. It was a story she told often....more

An open letter to Oprah Winfrey

Dear Oprah, At 4 p.m. Monday, having studiously avoided all on-line references to the "big reveal" that you had scheduled, I flipped on the T.V. in my kitchen. My eyes pricked with tears listening to you weave the tale of Patricia.  As you narrated her story, I knew before you ever said it.  I knew Patricia was your sister.  Allow me to congratulate you on the new addition to your family! ...more

Oprah's Family Secret...

I'm sure everybody knows by now, Oprah has a sister! Family secrets were exposed today on The Oprah Show by none other than Ms. Winfrey herself. Oprah had hinted in pre-show sound bites that her upcoming Monday Show would expose a secret that left her "speechless". Well, now that's old news already as the show has aired and we all know the deal as far as the family wants to open it up to the eyes of the world. ...more

Cancer - The Chinese Way

I have asked my sister's permission to write about her condition, her situation.  She says "Not on FACEBOOK!" and that's fine, but what's happening, all the crazy 'domino effect' type things that are happening, need to be documented and I think she sees that now. Just to recap: my 34 year old sister has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She was covered under her husband's insurance and was recieving treatment at so called 'infusion centers' but then work changed his policy and she had to switch doctors and infusion centers after only her first couple of chemo sessions....more

Sister Wives?

There's a new show on TLC called Sister Wives, about a polygamist family. There's the Dad, 3 wives, and 12 kids with one on the way. I'm super easy going with the lifestyles of other people. If this is what these people truly want, that's all fine with me. All of the wives grew up in this type of family, so they knew what they were doing. None of them were child brides and anything like that. And shockingly enough, the kids seem well adjusted and happy....more

Poking the Bear

*** please do not post outside of BlogHer at this time *** I needed to say this somewhere and can't post on my personal blog, etc. due to the sensitive nature of the situation. I know none of the people involved are on BlogHer. ****** My little sister became a hero to me yesterday. Let me tell you, coming from me that is no small thing. We don’t get along at all, don’t really like each other, and wouldn’t be friends if we weren’t related. That, however, is a story for another time. My sister, R, made an extremely difficult but brave decision....more
