Welcome back to #SYTYCD, and it's all on you now, people! Meaning no more judges saves. It's all America voting now.Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are joined by Christina Applegate as guest judge (and yes, she has some real cred as a dancer, having toured as Charity in the Bob Fosse-choreographed Sweet Charity).Last night each dancer danced once with an All-Star, once with a fellow semi-finalist, and once solo. We got to see a lot of them, in other words. So, let's get started:...more
The show opens with a Tyce Diorio routine that's a tribute to Gene Kelly. Missed why. What I didn't miss was that Tyce himself was dancing, and it was clear Cole wasn't doing much. They referred to him as "slightly injured", but you couldn't tell at all when his number came along. I thought it might be an overall evening about Gene Kelly. But no, pity....more
It's a very special episode of #SYTYCD. Yes, it's Mia Michaels night…but don't get too excited. These aren't going to be new routines. They're classic Mia routines that have already been done in previous seasons. Hmmm.Part of me thinks it will be awesome to see these again, part of me thinks it won't really serve the current contestants. As it turns out, I am right on both counts. The guest judges joining Nigel and Mary are Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt (aka the Ballet Boys, who I am not enough of a dance aficionado to have heard of).And away we go!...more
We're back, and the Top 16 will perform tonight (including new couple Amber and Brandon) even though we already know who will be in the Bottom Six from last week. Christina Applegate is back as Guest Judge. And she loves this show and dancing and dancers very very much.1. Tiffany and George danced a Hip Hop routine by Tabitha and Napoleon...more
Welcome to week #2 of #SYTYCD, and I think I'm getting how this season will work, with no results show, but America still getting to vote. Each week everyone will dance, even though the votes are already in on who the bottom folks are. After all the dancing, they'll announce the bottom folks. At which point the judges can still decide to have some of them dance for their lives, or they can just make a decision right then and there. Got it? Good....more
I'm so glad that So You Think You Can Dance has a summer season. It’s been a while since I’ve been hooked in like this, but how could I not be with such raw talent and amazing choreographed pieces? It’s especially joyous when I watch DVR recordings with my 2.5 year old daughter, who feels dance in her soul and tries her best to mimic all the dance moves, subsequently providing her two cents to let me know if she likes a performance or not....more
Was it just me, or was last night a big old let-down?
Maybe it was that there were just too many damn routines.
Maybe it was that the routines were therefore too short.
Or that the high number of routines made the dancers tired....more
Alternate headline: Rob Marshall may be an Oompa Loompa, but at least he sticks up for the So You Think You Can Dancechoreographers!
Last night was, as my BlogHer colleague put it: A lotta show....more
Last night was a fine fine night of dancing on So You Think You Can Dance. it made me glad I wasn't a judge, and it made me think the All-Stars might get nervous that *they'd* be eliminated tonight, instead of the dancetestants!
We were treated to one routine with an All-Star and one solo from each dancer, but mostly we were treated to Neil Patrick Harris, yes, @ActuallyNPH himself!!! He readily admitted he wasn't a dance expert (and he's really not) but unlike with the other suspect guest judges, I just didn't care. Yes, I'm biased, I don't care: I loves me some NPH!...more
