One of the things I miss about living in the country is how many stars you could see at night. The stars always seemed brighter in the winter, but I think that’s in part because the nights were so much longer. Here are 10 crafty ways you can sneak a few more stars into your winter nights. Meanwhile, back at the farm...lol

The girls and I made it down here yesterday, thanks to Daddy, who has to stay up and work for a day or two more. We had a good night, and managed to stay tucked in until 4:30am, when we universally agreed it was time for an early morning walk. It was awesome. The quietness of the woods and shore, the crickets, and the brightness of the stars made it worth being alone with the girls in nature. It goes without saying that we had a flashlight just in case there were four-legged critters**read raccoons**coming out from the woods. ...more

Viral Meme: We’re a Culture, Not a Costume

Racist Halloween costumes are nothing new, and neither are the pleas to stop them. But never underestimate the power of the Internet. This week a series of posters with the tagline “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” has gone viral. The images, featuring a Middle Eastern man, an Asian woman, a Black woman, and a Latino man each holding a photo of a derogatory ethnic costume, were created by a group of ten college students at Ohio University....more

Oscar Noms: "King's Speech" vs. "True Grit," Christopher Nolan was Robbed

See this is why ten Academy Award Best Picture nominees is ridiculous. We're talking Christopher Nolan, folks. Yep, the director of Inception. It's ironic that the reason the ten nominations came into being last year was because of the work of one of the best directors in Hollywood -- who's now been stiffed by the 2011 Oscar nominations. Two years ago in my post about the expanded Best Picture nominees, I saw this as a potential problem:...more
