Banned Books Week: Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight"

When Stephenie Meyer launched on to the book scene in 2005 no one could have guessed that she'd be launching one of the most successful series of the decade. Not only that, but with Twilight she turned all that we thought we knew about vampires upside down. Suddenly vampires could go out in the sunlight, they just didn't because it made them *sparkle*. ...more

Stephenie Meyer's The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

When Stephenie Meyer announced that she was publishing a novella, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, I rolled my eyes and swore I wasn’t going to read it. Nope. Nuh-uh. Not doing it. I should have known better. I said the same thing about Breaking Dawn, and that only lasted two days. I’ve read it, and darn it all, I liked Bree. ...more

When Twihards Name Babies: Who's a Cute Little Cullen?

Nothing says "I love you" to a new baby than a name that suggests the undead. After all, what could be more admirable than the ability to drain another person's blood with your razor-sharp teeth? If you're not really into vampires, you can always go to werewolf route and align your child's moniker with Team Jacob. So many are, after all. According to Time magazine, people are loving names from Twilight for their offspring. ...more

We were New Mooned

I've been a fan of the Twilight books since long before there was Twilight mania. But the Twilight movie, ugh. I never wanted to see another Twilight related movie again. It was so bad that it was even hard to heckle. And if I can't heckle something... Did I say ugh? What was I thinking when I agreed to take RJ, her sister and her only slightly hesitant brother to see New Moon - at 7pm on Friday night? I'd like to blame menopause but I think I'll blame Honeybeast instead. It was HER idea. ...more

Does your pocketbook have a conscience?

When you make large purchases, do you research the practices of the businesses you might be supporting with your hard earned dollars, and does it influence your decisions? What about medium sized purchases? What about small ones? Do you care about the politics or personal practices of your favorite authors? How about movies stars? Directors? ...more

Twilight DVD to be released Friday at Midnight, and even old ladies like myself swoon

So the Twilight DVD drops this weekend, but no, I'm not going to be lining up at my local Borders to buy it. Are you serious? I had that back-ordered at Amazon, like, months ago. Which means that I can avoid the fan frenzy that's going to start percolating sometime in the wee hours tomorrow, which is great, because although I am, in some very important respects, a fan who has been known to indulge in teh frenzy, I am also old and averse to being trampled by teenagers wearing Team Edward t-shirts. Also: I have a life. ...more

T-w-i-l-i-g-h-t Review

Me, along with everyone in this small town, were at the 1:45 p.m. movie yesterday!! ...more

I've been having fun reading Twilight for the first time, and blogging about the experience.  It seems like everyone I talk to has an adamant opinion, unswervingly for, or against "Twilight."  I'd love to get more involved in a discussion of the book, of the movie (which I do not plan to see in theaters.  waiting for cable!) I'm reading the book, blogging about the experience, and biding my time until I write the post about vampire books and movies I like much, much better.  But I have to read Twilight first, to make sure I know, in detail, what I dislike about it. ...more
