It's Mardi Gras: King Cake Time!

When Mardi Gras rolls around, and the good times roll, they roll with goodies, and the most infamous is the King Cake. It is a traditional offering that dates back to medieval times and represents the three kings of Orient, who bestowed gifts upon the baby Jesus on the Twelfth Night (January 6th - this is the day the Mardi Gras season technically begins).   The sugar sprinkles are purple, green, and gold to symbolize justice, faith, and power, respectively.  Traditionally there is a bean, or little plastic baby baked in, to symbolize the infant Jesus, and fertility.  Carnival revelers hold king cake parties, and whoever gets the baby in their slice supposedly gets good luck, but has to buy (or bake) the cake next year....more
