Would a proposed federal gas tax holiday give consumers much-needed relief at the pump. or would it lead to higher gas prices, more unemployment and fewer resources for critically-needed road maintenance? The three leading presidential candidates don't agree, and neither do bloggers.Sen. John McCain was the first to call for a suspension of gasoline taxes during the summer months of this year, as part of a broader economic plan. His website says:
Tax day has come and gone for the year, but I'm still sitting here in a tax funk, a little bitter about it all. Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind throwing my fair share of my hard earned money down the rat hole of misappropriated and mismanaged government spending, it's my civic duty.
In less than one week it'll be Tax Day here in the US - April 15, 2008. Each year the media features people lining up at the post office trying to get their return postmarked by the midnight deadline. Perhaps it is because I've been one of those proactive people all my life, but I don't get the tax procrastination thing. It's not like you don't know it is coming. Heck it is even the same date every year (or a day or two later if tax day falls on a weekend). There are no hidden surprises regarding what you need to do to file and when it is due. So what gives?
In addition to death and taxes, you can add financial burden to the list of things certain in the life of someone with infertility. Even those with insurance coverage live in fear of reaching the cap and often need to fight for compensation regardless. Rachel at Henry Street is a case in point. She was recently denied coverage in her mandated state because regardless of the numerous miscarriages, failed IVF cycles, and balanced translocation diagnosis, they are not considered infertile by the state's definition.
Did you know that New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer has proposed taxing drug dealers' inventory to help balance the state's hemorrhaging budget? That's just one of the new things I learned from surfing some of the newer additions to BlogHer's list of law blogs.
It's down to the wire and if you're a freelance artist like myself, you're scrambling to find the best buys to beef up your studio in order to send less to Uncle Sam come April 15th. Wondering what might be a good tax write off and also send your business soaring? Here's my list of must-haves between now and when the gong strikes twelve.
