Turning 41: 5 things that kinda rock.

Did you guess it from the title?Yep.  Me. 40 plus one.As in: four decades plus one year.I know, I know -  you'd nevvvver say it by looking at me, would you? ;-) Last year, I didn't write anything about turning 40, which seems a more logical milestone for writing something like this. But, I ignored the entire thing.  As in: pretended in never happened. 'Cause I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22.  ...more

The Sting of Being Replaced by a Younger, Prettier, Thinner, Nicer Woman

To protect the innocent and silicone enhanced, some names have been changed. Well, one name……okay, two. It’s weird how every time I go to scoop out my cat Callie’s litter box, she seems to instantly materialize in front of me with this horrified look of betrayal, as if to say “How COULD YOU??? Those creations are precious parts of who I am! And you’re just going to discard them with the used Q-tips and coffee grounds? Why don’t you toss out my soul and your Grandma’s wedding band while you’re at it!?!?”...more

Celebrating 40 After the Year of No Fear

Until I hit 39 nearly every decision (or lack of decision) in my life had been directly or indirectly based on fear. Fear of isolation, loneliness, success, emotions, instability. You name a fear and I can probably tell you a decision I made based on it.Last October as I approached my last year in my 30s, I finally said “fuck fear.” (Sorry for the profanity, but fear is powerful and you need a strong word to combat it.) I deemed my 39th year “the year of no fear.”...more

A Numbers Game

The question felt like it came from out of thin air. “So, what does it feel like to have such self confidence?” It took everything I had to refrain from looking behind me and mumbling “I’m sorry, are you talking to me?”. It came from a woman in her late 20s who was part of an evening group that I had recently joined. The age group was varied and sparked lots of interesting dialogue, this one being no exception.  She was looking at me curiously with a matter of fact gaze that suggested she was genuinely interested in my answer. ...more

Sweating Like a Mother

I have always been athletic; I played every sport a girl could play in high school and I also played intramurals in college, though I’ll admit that this endeavor was more to forge out time to hang with the cute fraternity coaches than out of an undying love for, say, yardball. I was fortunate to have pregnancies wherein I gained a manageable amount of weight which my babies then proceeded to nurse off in the first few months. Overall, until I hit the big 4-0, I’ve been one of those lucky gals who didn’t need to fret about physique....more

A Woman in Decades

I turn forty on a Wednesday, and for me this is a long-awaited day. I have wanted to be forty since I was in my twenties. Why? Because the idea of turning forty is ripe with a sense of true womanhood. You are not a woman, not really, until you are forty. Everything before forty is trite, experimental, and full of the work that will bring you the fruits of forty. ...more
