Do You Shine a Spotlight on Other People's Posts?

So back when I was in Hebrew school like three zillion years ago, we learned about Rambam and his ladder of giving. There were eight levels, and it was in-grained in our brain the best way to give. While the lowest rung of giving reluctantly after being asked was you know, kinda fine if that's the sort of person you want to be, we should all be aiming for that top rung of giving before being asked and not doing it for personal glory. Just giving because it's the right thing to do and we all benefit when people act altruistically. And that's how I approach sharing blog posts. ...more

What Was Your Best Tweet in 2014?

I once went to a party where the photographer was streaming images directly to a screen as she took them. So people paused in the middle of dancing to admire themselves dancing. Or paused from eating to watch themselves taking a bite a few minutes earlier. And we got to relive the whole party as we lived the party. That's sort of what Twitter's Year in Review feels like. ...more

6 Twitter Fails You May Be Making

Some people love Twitter, and others just don't get it and quit before they ever gave the site a real chance. I fall into the first group — it's my favorite social media site. Looking through some of the tweets that go out on a daily basis, I think I understand why so many give up. They don't understand how to Tweet effectively in order to turn it into a useful tool. If you're using Twitter for your business or to promote your blog, I invite you to take a look at how you're using it on a daily basis in case you're making some of these very common mistakes. ...more

How Much Time Do You Spend on Social Media?

Mediabistro recently had an article breaking down how much time people in various age demographics spend on social media sites. I was pleased with their base list of sites, mostly because even poor little Ello made the list. (You're so cutting edge, Mediabistro.) All that said, I realized that I have more in common with women over 60 than I do with my age demographic. I am doing social media all wrong for a 40-year-old. ...more

Parents Don't Have Time to READ!

I've been tired since 1983, which not-so-coincidentally is the year my first daughter was born.  Since she graced my life, there have been four more daughters. The youngest is now 10 and I'm finally pulling out of that always-tired stage.  ...more

Do I Have A Voice? Can You Hear Me Now?

Perhaps one day I will have a voice, but for now I have voices. They are all mine. There are times when I write as a little girl with strong opinions who is still learning to use her mouth to form the right words.“Fank you.”“I fink fings ought to be done different.”“And den dey said fings, and den I got mad.”This is mostly a private practice, but it allows me to express feelings in a creative way. It allows me to have a slightly different point of view that is still authentic but easier to express....more

Will Ello Kill Facebook, or Is It Just a Lot of Hype?

I joined Ello because everyone else was joining Ello. (And yes, if all the kids jumped off the bridge, I would jump off the bridge, too!) And now we're all milling about at Ello, and it feels like the awkward start of a party. You know what I'm talking about? That moment when you first get there, when the hostess is still running around, cleaning up by tucking her clothes underneath her blanket. It's that moment before all the other people arrive, and you're just sort of standing about, making small talk with people while you wait for everything to... begin. Except... what if this is it? What if this is Ello? What if this social media party turns out to be a dud because the hosts didn't count on the mass Exodus from Facebook this week when Facebook stuck to their "you need to use your real name" guns that brought everyone over Ello's threshold? Or what if it turns into a social media revolution that forces the larger sites to change the way they interact with users? ...more
