The real reason I'm dreading the beginning of school

Miles starts school this month.  I haven't written too much about it, save for a post about his desire for a Toy Story backpack, partially because writing about it means thinking about it and thinking about it means admitting that he is growing up and will one day soon be going away to college.  And then partially because I'm not really sure to say about it and I feel like I should be able to write a post that will make everyone cry....more

Born at the Right Time

I don’t know how many times I’ve wished harm to come to one of my sisters.Whether it was because my baby sister cut off my Barbies’ hair down to their rubber scalps (I had long outgrown the toys, but still. They were mine, and now they are massacred.); or the middle sister who stole my clothes and lent them out to her friends when we were in high school. (That is my Paul Simon Born At The Right Time Tour t-shirt, you silly hippy poser, and if I see you wearing it, I will rip it off of your patchouli-scented back.)...more

The Social Politics of Being Green

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about toxins.  Mostly, it seems that the topic finds its way to me rather than me seeking it out, and that could be a result of the heightened awareness in the US of just how many chemicals we come in contact with every day.  Whatever the reason, I'm doing my best to examine the issues as rationally as I can without freaking out....more

Over 4,000 men ages 16 - 26 were given 3 doses of the Gardisil vaccine. None of them had HPV prior to receiving the vaccine.  After 2 1/2 years, only 3 men who received the vaccine developed genital warts compared to 28 men who received the placebo....more

The Vaccinate Debate

Do you vaccinate your kids? I do, and I'll tell you why. Because I don't want my children out and about in a world where they could easily catch a deadly disease. A deadly disease that we have a means to fight. A deadly disease that I could immunize them against. It's like having an antidote right at my fingertips. ...more
