The Thursday Thirteen - Valentine's Day Desserts

It's all about the love this week. Is there a better way to say I heart someone than to give him or her a dessert coated in sugar, candy, or chocolate? Nope. It's pretty much the best way ever to say I kinda sorta maybe like you more than anyone else on Earth. I'm trying to decide which dessert to make for the big day. As of now I'm thinking cupcakes. Cupcakes with hidden treasures inside, smothered in strawberry jam buttercream, and decorated with anything pink, red, or white that I can lay my sticky little hands on....more

Finally Time for Friday Fun: Valentine’s Love and Learning

We’ve been snowed/iced in for the last three days. At the first sign of sunlight and melted ice on the roads we broke out – straight to Cracker Barrel and Walmart. It was wonderful! It was also then that we realized that it was really and truly Valentine’s day. Being stuck in the house all week we’ve only thought about the snow and what great food and snacks we could consume. Today, being out and about, seeing folks snatch up pink and red flowers and balloons has reminded us that this is a nationally recognized day of love....more

Zombies and creepy flying babies with weapons are symbols of love?

Single women don't need Valentine's Day survival tips. It's a Friday night this year, my friend, not a Zombie Apocalypse. I understand the confusion, though. It is the feast of an undead saint who continues to walk among us. He and his minion- Cupid-- spread fear and eat brains one night a year, an offering to the gods of stereotypes and relationship rules. A creepy flying baby with hunting gear can scare the sh*t out of a girl. Just saying....more

Valentine's Day is Not for Me!

Valentine’s? San Valentín? Halloween? It’s all very confusing to me, and I’ve been mixing up those words since I moved to the USA in the 2000's. I grew up in Latin America, and down there Valentine’s is not a common celebration or tradition. I only started hearing about Valentine’s in the late 90's and it was all due to Hollywood movies. But it all felt very fake and forced....more

Just One Day For Love?

ust one day for love?  This seems to be the message Valentines Day sends, that on one day (Feb.14th) you should shower your loved one with flowers, jewelry and all manner of gifts. I think that is silly. You have to admire someone’s marketing skills as they have built a holiday out of something that should be an everyday occurrence. I think you should let people you care about know that you love them everyday, not just once a year....more
