So Long, Suckers: "It Creature" Zombies Leave Vampires in the Lurch

Ever since the publication of a certain 2005 novel in which a sparkly centarian disguised as a teen heartthrob seduced a dead-eyed transfer student in a tree (hint for those living underground, or in exile -- it rhymes with “Schmilight”), vampires have ruled the pop culture landscape, spawning TV shows, indie-rock bands, and some very creepy Etsy products. But if recent media trends are any indication, there’s a new It Creature swaying stiffly into town. ...more

Family TV Review: The Vampire Diaries, Season 2

The Vampire Diaries is fast-paced, sexy and shocking, and includes everything you might expect from a teen-based vampire show: angst, dramatic tension, sexy creatures of the night, and a soundtrack that includes artists like MGMT and The Killers. Overall, the TV-14 (V) rating is on target. The Vampire Diaries is edgier than the Twilight franchise. Also note that the books on which this series is based pre-dated Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books by about 15 years. ...more

Stephenie Meyer's The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

When Stephenie Meyer announced that she was publishing a novella, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, I rolled my eyes and swore I wasn’t going to read it. Nope. Nuh-uh. Not doing it. If y'all like hot and hunky men and you aren't watchin' True Blood, you might as well get yourselves to the local loony bin, 'cause the men of Bon Temps, Louisiana are smokin'! Sunday night, True Blood kicked off its third season with a bang -- or rather a fang, since the show is a modern-day vampire drama. Vampires Versus The Tooth Fairy: How Do You Talk About Storybook Monsters With Your Kids?

If I'm committed to encouraging my daughter's imagination and love of story and fantasy, how do I treat the fantastical stories that her playmates come up with? Do I treat vampires differently than I do, say, the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus? Why am I so tempted to discriminate on the basis of (seeming) monstrosity? ...more
