The Little Things DO Matter – What REALLY Sets You Apart

This week I experienced a personal heartbreak.  It was during that time that I was once again reminded what truly sets someone (and their business) apart.  It has nothing to do with flashy stuff, extra letters after your name, or a snappy elevator pitch.  It is all about having heart, caring about the little things, and showing up to serve as a real, authentic, and caring human being. ...more

How Much Is TOO Much to Spend at the Veterinarian?

I have a kitty that is about 2-3 years old ... I don't know her exact age because I got her from a co-worker whose 2 dogs and cat bullied her. A couple of days ago, I noticed Chee Bee acting strange. Strange like lying under the nightstand, in a corner, under the center of the bed when usually she lays on the bed or inside the box spring lining like a hammock where she tore the lining. She also hadn't eaten or drank anything for at least 24 hours. ...more

Dog Fair Vet: My Hero

Some dogs never get a chance to strut their stuff. She decided to organize a community dog fair. There dogs of all breeds and conditions could compete and be adored. It worked, dogs of every variety attended. At one event there was a blind malamute, a deaf chocolate Labrador and a three legged poodle. The categories ranged from “meat head”, to “most like owner”. to “most impervious to human commands”. to “Most like a movie mutt” and “vet's favorite”....more

Fast Dogs--Part IV

My eyes watered and bulged as I listened to the pretty, young veterinarian give me and my husband the run down on Little Paint's surgery.             "She lost a tooth and a toe, and I can't tell you how many stitches that chest wound took."             I groaned.  Shut my eyes and pressed my palms into my eyebrows.             "Look on the bright side," the vet said.  "Her chest doesn't fall op...more

Fast Dogs--Part I

When our long-legged, beagle-howling, slut puppy, sister hounds run away, my husband always says a prayer.  "I pray they never come back."I'm telling you what, they were so cute when we got 'em at the Manteo Island Animal Shelter thirteen years ago. I loved the way their silky ears were bigger than their heads....more

Killing Her Softly

I don’t want to get out of bed. I’m afraid to actually.  If I get up, I’ll have to look out the window.  Then I’ll know.  If my dog is alive or not.              “If she’s dead in the morning,” husband had said, “I’ll put her in the Honda and take her to work.  So you all don’t have to--  You know . ....more

Adventures in Veterinary Medicine - Beast

I worked in various veterinary clinics for over twelve years, and during those years, I met some pretty amazing cats and dogs.  The memories of some of these animals, as well as the lessons they taught, have stuck with me over the years, and I thought it was...more
