A Touch of Spice

A Touch of SpiceSo I've been allowed to have a bit of a play in the kitchen - and I thought that I would have a play with Moroccan Spices; turmeric, coriander, cumin, ginger. I was surprised at how quickly the meal came together (although I did marinate the meat the night before). If you're looking for something with lots of flavour and the something which is ready in less than 20 minutes (20 MINUTES!!) than this dish is for you.Moroccan Lamb and Apricot CouscousSpiced Moroccan Lamb3 lamb back-straps (or lamb fillets)1/2 cup apricot nectar...more

Strep culture came back negative. So, herbal we go: gargling cayenne, apple cider vinegar, drinking green tea w/ginger and ginseng. The cayenne helped yesterday, but burned my tongue a bit. If nothing else, the warmth of the tea soothes my throat. I think chamomile might have been better, but what do I know about teas?! I'm a coffee drinker! But I have trying to go more 'natural' so here's my chance. I got most of the ideas from Earthclinic.com and Health911.com. ...more

Pickled Schmaltz Herring

Eye am in a food book tizzy. Each time I read of a new book coming out with reference to Food I am at the bookstore or online buying it.  If not that, then at the Library reserving it, and if necessary, requesting it for their purchase....more

Happy International Pickle Week! Celebrate with Some Unusual Pickles

International Pickle Week takes place May 15-25 this year -- and yes, I am noting for the record that that's actually 10 days, but who am I to argue with the Pickle Authorities? The event, scheduled right around the same time of year that the Northern Hemisphere is planting cucumbers for summer growth, celebrates those briny, vinegary vegetables that serve as a savory snack or condiment. ...more

I've made pickled daikon and pickled yellow squash, and I really like any kind of pickle. ...more

Vodka: The New (Tastier) Vinegar?

I’m not sure which I’m more excited about: the really cool organic U.S.-made vodka in the striking, modern, reusable-as-a-vase bottle or the crazy “eco”-uses we have for that vodka (besides drinking it of course. I’ve long been a fan of its, uhm, MEDICINAL purposes, but now I have other reasons to stay stocked up. Yeah, that’s it, medicine & cleaning). We’ve all been inundated with the virtues of vinegar as a staple for green living. But you gotta admit, unless you’re clever with the essential oil add-ins, it’s kind of stinky. ...more

Moving Forward to the Old Ways?

Did your grandmother clean with vinegar? If not, I bet your great-grandmother did. Also, how did they clean tubs and sinks? Maybe one generation back, Grandma used Bon Ami or Baking Soda. But, before that? I bet no one cared what their tubs and sinks looked like. My mom came over one day and saw that I was drying clothes on a clothes line and said, “Wow, you are really going back to the old ways with this green living!” Yes, that is true. When we try to simplify and green our lives, it does feels like we are going back to the old ways. Is that so bad? ...more

A Simple Solution for Removing Gum

A few months ago, I took a trip to California.  As the trip was a combination of business and pleasure, I had my laptop with me.  During a layover in Detroit, I sat on a bench and placed my laptop bag on my lap, so I could search for a pen.  ...more

In A Pickle

For several years now I have been making my own housecleaning products or using all natural ones. The fact that my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in February, at 45 years old, has just ramped up my paranoia about environmental factors which lead to cancer. So, I have accordingly ramped up my efforts to live a more chemical free life. ...more

Tuna with Pimiento-Stuffed Olives

This a delicious way to greet your guests this holiday season! As the tuna steaks need to be marinated, start preparing the dish a day before it is going to be served. Make sure to cut the steaks across the grain to form 1-inch thick cubes. http://thecookmobile.com/tuna-with-pimiento-stuffed-olives/ ...more
