Becoming a Woman and Walking like a Fawn: A Lesson in Fashion.

Sometimes, in spite of the glitter and my intense love for romantic comedies, I fail at being a woman. But not in the Sheryl Sandberg-esque, “I can’t have it all and I make seventy cents to your dollar” kind of way. I kill it when it comes to that. Obviously....more

I'm a Bridesmaid at 39

The day I received a beautiful card in the mail from one of my dearest friends asking me to be in her wedding, I cried. She told me how much our 10-year friendship has meant to her and how much she wanted me to be by her side as she married the man she loved. To be her matron of honor is an honor that I have only begun to appreciate in recent years as I’ve learned the importance of strong friendships and happy marriages....more

Technology doesn't always take the cake!

My world (like everyone else’s) depends on technology. Whether I want it to or not.I was talking to John on the phone the other day when I heard a beep over the line. Dear Sir, Please Do Not "Shush" My Child

Dear Sir, Hi. I’d like to introduce you to my son. His name is Charlie. He’s two-and-a-half. He’s just sat through a wedding ceremony, about 30 minutes of adult mingling time, and an entire room full of people finishing a nice meal. He only cried a couple of times, and he’s gone all day without a nap. It is now 7:30 PM, and there is a big, open dance floor waiting to get danced on. He’s the kid you just said “Ssshh, ssssshhhhhh, SSSSSHHHHHH!” to....more

When A Man Cries...

I've been a regular little raindrop as of late, releasing waterworks on the regular; everything from Reality TV to Soap opera drama to short story paragraphs to special Nightly News "Making A Difference" segments. Whenever the storm comes, I just suck it up and blame it on female emotions. Women crying is just the norm and an acceptable part of our genetic makeup.  Men, on the other hand, get a raw deal in this scenario....more

Somebody Help Me! We’re Having a Wedding!

John and I have known for four and a half months that Dan was going to propose to Brittany. We were visiting them in Charleston last March and while the guys were grilling Dan said:“Mr. John,” (So Southern!) “Since we’re alone right now I wanted to tell…I mean ask you if it’s ok with you if I ask Brittany to marry me?”John: “Oh, thank goodness!”OK, just kidding, what he really said was something like, “Well we just want her to be happy.”...more

10 Lessons Learned When Katrina Bamboozled My Wedding

It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years since my wedding was interrupted by a little thing called Hurricane Katrina. At the time it seemed surreal, and though it wasn’t anything like the wedding we had planned, in many ways it was even better.Over the last few months I’ve watched other natural disasters attack our country – from heartbreaking wildfires to torrential storms and now the recent destruction of Hurricane Isaac.  So many lives were affected in tragic ways and everyone has a different story....more

Pinterest and nausea

Good afternoon, ladies! This is my first official post and mostly just an attempt to dip my toe in BlogHer water... You know, is anybody out there??This weekend has me in bed feeling queasy after a very long week of work. I'm a grad student literally thisclose to finishing; alas, my thesis is getting in the way. The upcoming GRE English test has me reading more than I can possibly fit into my brain, Ph.D. applications are due in December--on top of a regular load of classes. ...more
