Weekend Menu Planning: It's Time to Make Green Cabbage Salad

Even though St. Patrick's Day will be over by the time you read this, if you hurry to the grocery store you can probably still take advantage of one of my favorite traditions of the day. I'm talking about ordinary green cabbage, and the way it goes on sale the week of St. Patrick's Day so people can make Irish (or Irish American) dishes like Corned Beef and Cabbage and Colcannon. I like dishes like that with cooked cabbage well enough, but what I really love is raw cabbage salads, so every year at this time I load up on cabbage while it's super cheap at the store. ...more

Weekend Menu Planning: Irish Soda Bread and Other St. Patrick's Day Treats

Next week is St. Patrick's Day, so this weekend is the perfect time to make some Irish (or Irish-American) foods to celebrate. (And if cupcakes or cookies are more your idea of holiday food, look after the soda bread recipes for some ideas for those!) ...more

Weekend Menu Planning: Celebrate Mardi Gras with Some New Orleans Foods

I'm guessing this weekend many people will be focused on Mardi Gras, a time of celebration leading up to Ash Wednesday or the first day of Lent, which falls on March 9 this year. Some Christians give up meat or other favorite foods for the six weeks of Lent, so the Mardi Gras celebration represents the last chance to indulge in rich foods. Mardi Gras celebrations in the U.S. are commonly associated with New Orleans, and although many traditional New Orleans foods are associated with this holiday, no two foods symbolize Mardi Gras more than making King Cake and eating pancakes on Fat Tuesday. ...more

Weekend Menu Planning: Eat More Heart Healthy Fish in February

Did you know that February is American Heart Month and that the American Heart Association recommends eating fish that's high in Omaga-3 fatty acids at least twice a week? I love fish and cook it fairly often, but when I checked to see which fish have the most Omega-3, I realized I could do better at eating the right types of fish. Salt water fish, especially salmon, fresh tuna, herring, mackerel, and sardines are highest in Omega-3 fatty acids, but some freshwater fish is also good, especially lake trout, channel catfish, and carp. ...more
