6 Ways White Feminists Should Not Respond to Racism

Spoiler alert: A lot of white people don’t entirely understand racism. Even educated, well-meaning, white feminists and advocates for social justice often miss the mark when talking about race. I am sure that I (a white person and a feminist) have been personally guilty of it (in fact, I realize with some anxiety that I could be guilty of it right now). And I get that it’s jarring to be called out for something that wasn’t your intention, and it’s natural to want to leap to your own defense....more

How to Make Perfect White Rice Your Kids Will Love!

Ok so I've tried different ways to make rice but this has to be the simplest way I could ever do it. As a kid, we ate rice every day except for Friday. What was the philosophy behind that? I don't know. But it was every day. ...more

Is It "Mid-Winter" Yet?

I am so done with this weather. In particular, I'm done with    *White, whiteness, the color white...more

Have I Become Racist Against White People?

I recently got into a little disagreement on Facebook, through a comment thread on an acquaintance’s page. I left a comment saying that people who fly confederate flags are generally not the kind of people who a black man (or woman) might want to be caught in a dark alley with. My point was not so much that flying a confederate flag makes you a racist, but in my experience, they usually are. Then I got called a racist. By a white guy from Mississippi. Which, as another commenter on the thread pointed out, was kind of humorous, seeing as I am also white....more

Basic White Sandwich Bread

School has been a whirlwind lately, with four 3-hour labs per week and regular lectures on top, I really haven’t had much time to cook lately. Even bread has been slow-coming (to the disappointment of my boyfriend, I’m sure).Speaking of bread, my formerly active and extremely happy little starter has not been so happy lately. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that the water at my new house is no good, and that it’s too darn cold. We’ll see if I can solve this little mystery and finally make some good sourdough again. Until that happens, loaf pan breads it is....more

Life Through a Multiracial Lens

Since I finished reading The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, a few days ago, I have been filled with all kinds of thoughts and feelings about my own life. I took awhile for me to read the book in the first place – I was ambivalent and suspect that it would be too stereotyped for me to stomach.  I found myself thoroughly engrossed and deeply moved. ...more

According to the study, marriages between African Americans and whites are increasing rapidly, but remain a small number....more

Labor Day and White Pants?

I think I first heard about not wearing white pants after Labor Day from one of my High School friends, Abby Alexander.  She was so sure about this fact that she even showed me magazine articles about it.So for years, I didn’t wear white after Labor Day.I was recently looking through my closet and found that I have almost two dozen pairs of white pants — cropped pants, capris and long pants.  Am I really not going to wear these after Labor Day?...more
