What Men (and Everyone, Really) Can Do To Support Gender Equity in Tech

I recently received this thoughtful question about the role of male allies in solving the gender imbalance in the tech industry: As a guy in the tech industry, I honestly don’t know how to fix most of the issues… I do want to help, but like many other guys I don’t know the best way to do it. I recognize and accept that there are biases and barriers in our industry, but I don’t on know what can be done. ...more

International Women's Day 2011

Since 1911 we have been celebrating March 8th as International Women's Day. This date is commemorated at the United Nations and in many countries is considered a national holiday. As women come together to celebrate this day, they can look back to decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace, and development. It is the story of ordinary women as history makers. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the celebration. ...more

Girls Talking Tech: From New Ways of Thinking to iPod Vibrators

An Argentinian blog called Mujer y Tecnologia or Women and Technology appeared in the BlogHer Network a few days ago. I checked it out. I looked at it in Spanish first. Even the Spanish couldn't prevent me from picking up on a bits about Facebook and anti-virus software and a vibrator connected to an iPod. What? Well, that hooked me. I was irresistibly drawn to Google translate for an English version. ...more

Ann Smarty, SEO Expert, Shares Her Secrets

SEO is just about improving search engine rankings. Most blogs (as well as most of my own blogs) do not really rely on Google's traffic. Most of us rely on communities we network in and social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook. I'll share my SEO tips further on but here I'd share the most effective non-SEO tips. ...more

The Women of Drupal: an Ada Lovelace Day Appreciation

On this Ada Lovelace Day, I wracked my brain for someone to write about, and came up blank — not because I couldn't think of anyone, but because I can't pick out the one woman in technology or science who's exceptional in some way, because there are so many. So I'm writing about a group of women who who mostly don't know each other but are united by a project that's dear to them, and to me: Drupal. Meet the Drupalchix ...more

For my mom on Ada Lovelace Day

Tech Podcasts You'll Want to Hear

These days almost everyone I know has some sort of smartphone, definitely has an iTunes account, and is usually plugged in some way or another. I know I spend an inordinate amount of time sitting in my car waiting: waiting for my kids to arrive at the bus stop after school, waiting for the nurse to call me back to the exam room for my appointment, waiting for my oil to be changed. I realize that some of you may like a little down time, and I agree. But I find myself also wanting to make the most of that time and if I can listen to a podcast that has the double-bonus of being interesting while I learn something, I'd just as soon be plugged in. ...more

Are Computers and Technology Still a Man's Domain?

So are there really more men experts in the computing field or does it just seem that way? That question is part of an ongoing and raging debate about women in technology. From women missing as top speakers at technology conferences to little girls shunning computers for something less boring is male dominance in the field a reality or an illusion? ...more
